An American Dentist Killed Zimbabwe’s Famous Lion

Cecil the lion, a famous black-maned resident of Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park, died at the hands of an American dentist, conservationists claim.

They say Walter Palmer paid $50,000 to hunt and kill Cecil with a bow and arrow. The incident occurred around July 6, with a professional hunting outfit reportedly luring Cecil outside the boundaries of the protected reserve using a dead animal as bait.

“Mr. Palmer shot Cecil with a bow and arrow but this shot didn't kill him,” Johnny Rodrigues, chairman of the Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force, said in a statement. “They tracked him down and found him 40 hours later when they shot him with a gun. Cecil, who was known all over the world would have earned millions of dollars just from sightseeing. Walter Palmer apparently paid $50,000 for the kill."

It wasn’t the first kill for Palmer, who has multiple photos posted on the website Trophy Hunt America showing the Minnesota resident posing with dead lions, rhinos, water buffalo, warthogs, and other animals.

The Telegraph is reporting from two independent sources that Palmer was indeed the hunter listed on the permit documents, and a spokesperson for Palmer told the news outlet that Palmer believes he is the one responsible for the lion’s death.

I hope the U.S. extradites this scumbag to Zimbabwe and that he gets prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

R.I.P. Cecil.

I am far from a tree hugger, but that was pretty low.

Almost as low as a certain scumbag president?

If this guy has committed a crime, I hope he’s prosecuted.

That said, I find it well nigh impossible to work up the kind of outrage the Internet has done over the death of a lion. Circle of life, Cecil.

I agree. If the lion was posing no threat and in a game preserve. Pure stupidity.

I feel the same. Not a tree hugger but in this day and age is this really necessary? I do not think so.

Walter, shot with an arrow, wanders for 40 hours--but, don't shoot him. . .yet. It's the circle of life, Walter. You mad, Bro'?

When it comes to the “main stream news” we should always ask, “what is the rest of the story?”

The hunter did nothing wrong taking a lion was at the end of his life expectancy.

Amazing how people get all lathered up about a lion getting killed but then how many babies were aborted today? And most people didn’t care even a bit.

“As far as I understand, Walter believes that he might have shot that lion that has been referred to as Cecil,” the spokesperson said. “What he’ll tell you is that he had the proper legal permits and he had hired several professional guides, so he’s not denying that he may be the person who shot this lion. He is a big-game hunter; he hunts the world over.”

What’s the problem? Poaching is bad. This would not appear to be poaching, but a legal hunt.

From what I understand from my brother who went on a hunting safari there.....the locals eat just about any ‘bush meat’.

What he killed (nothing endangered) he gave to the villages for food so it wasn’t wasted. That’s kind of a code in our family. You don’t kill something that can’t be eaten. What this guy did is disgraceful.

I used to enjoy watching the outdoor hunting channels until they became nothing but infomercials for equipment and guided hunts on specially stocked and cultivated game preserves.

That's no longer hunting, it's just baiting and shooting from specialty blinds.

I just don’t get it. The question is.....why? Why is this something anyone would do on purpose? This must surely be a crime in that country.

What kind of depraved person would do this? Who would want this sadistic killer as their dentist? I hope that all of his patients refuse to return to him when (and if) he returns home to America.

I won’t lose a lot of sleep over this, but in my heart of hearts I think that in order for it to be considered “sporting” the animal has to have some kind of chance. And those modern composite bows are an absolute joke.

Not that I condone the killing, but I am always amazed at the level of indignation over killing an animal over the killing of people.

So you're saying the hunter should have waited until after the lion starved to death because it could no longer hunt, or perhaps was torn apart by hyenas?
