Gov. race: Edwards leads as Vitter skids (Louisiana)
The Independent Reporter ^ | July 22, 2015

Democrat John Bel Edwards, left, has taken the lead over Sen. David Vitter and the other Republicans in the race. A widely respected firm’s latest poll on the Louisiana governor's race — a poll The Independent obtained through a source before its public release — shows the lone Democrat in the contest, Amite state Rep. John Bel Edwards, with a six-point lead over previous (and, as conventional wisdom would have it) frontrunner U.S. Sen. David Vitter.

Conducted sometime in late June by Market Research Insight, the respected and frequently used polling firm of Verne Kennedy, the poll shows Edwards with 30 percent support in the race, followed by Vitter at 24, Public Service Commissioner Scott Angelle at 14 and Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne at 12 percent. Twenty percent of respondents were undecided.

The figures are derived from respondents who either chose a candidate or indicated they were leaning toward that candidate. The pick/lean ratios for the candidates in the poll were Edwards 19/11, Vitter 20/4, Angelle 10/4 and Dardenne 9/3.

A similar MRI/Kennedy poll conducted a month before this most recent poll shows Edwards is maintaining traction with voters and charts a loss of momentum for Vitter. The earlier poll conducted May 20 had Vitter and Edwards tied at 29 percent support while Angelle had risen to 17 percent and Dardenne followed at 12. Angelle fell in favor with voters by three points from May to June while Dardenne remained stuck at 12 percent. The five-point drop by Vitter from May to June was the most precipitous among the candidates. Also, the number of undecided voters rose from 13 percent in May to 20 percent in June.

A victory by Edwards would be a huge embarrassment to Republicans in general and Bobby Jindal in particular.

Same old story.

Multiple Republican candidates split the vote.

The liberal wins!

Wish Vitter would have stayed in the Senate. He’s been good on illegal immigration and who knows what Louisiana will elect in his place. And even though Rubio has his great shortcomings, who knows what we’ll get from Florida to replace him.

What the heck is going on in LA? Has Bobby Jindal REALLY gotten the State in a mess?

There will be a runoff if no one gets a majority of the vote.

Maybe Bobby Jindal should run for Vitter’s seat.

First This article in some free rag called the independent and poll are pure crap.

Read the comments from local posters.

Its a financed push poll .

Second , LA state elections are always runoff elections because you have multiple candidates from both parties .

so why did you post this nonsense ? c Do you hate Vitter ????

Maybe so. The ambitions of some of these politicians could well cost us several seats in the Senate.>

Anyone know if Vitter's Senate term is over in 2016, or is he resigning and causing the need of a special election? And Jindal would have to forget about he presidential race at some point to run for the Senate.

Is it the case in Louisiana that if no candidate gets over 50% in the election that a run-off election is held?

I thought that’s the way it was in the Senatorial races in LA.

If so, it wouldn’t matter so much if the Dem has 29%, because in the run-off all the R votes would coalesce. Right, or not?

Some people are misunderstanding this poll. Edwards has ALL the Democrat support and can’t get above 30% in this all-party jungle primary. Vitter is running in a divided GOP field. We WANT a runoff between Edwards and Vitter, otherwise if it’s between a RINO and Vitter, the Dems and establishment will vote for the RINO. If it’s Vitter vs. Edwards, Vitter wins with 55-60% of the vote. Under no circumstances does the Dem Edwards win in November.

Vitter’s current term expires in Jan 2017. If he wins the Governorship, he’ll resign in Jan 2016 and appoint his successor to serve until the Nov elections (he’s unlikely to leave his seat until the day he is sworn in because he doesn’t want Jindal to appoint his successor, since he may appoint himself to the vacancy to give himself a leg up).

Well, that would keep him from being embarrassed by a bad finish in the Presidential Race. And, it would keep him in politics.

NFW ... Edwards used to be my Boss and trust me that sick twisted puppy has twice as many skeletons in his closet as both Clintons combined. (Bill was an amateur compared to Edwards)
Besides he is like a week away from croaking while shuffling up to a Press Conference behind his walker.

Probably more than a few senile or LIV in LA will think John Bel Edwards is Fast Eddie (who just ran for Congress again last year).

Yes, exactly that.

Last year's US Senate election Mary Landrieu got 42% of the vote to Bill Cassidy's 40%. Meaning that Landrieu "won" the ... open primary.

In the general election, Landrieu got 44% and Cassidy got 56%.

Duh, sorry, I meant open general election and runoff, respectively.
