Carr: Boston 2024 boondoggle united opponents (Olympic bid)
Boston Herald ^ | July 28, 2015 | By Howie Carr

Finally, at long last, someone has gone broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public.

And it couldn’t have happened to a nicer bunch — Boston 2024. There is a God.

The lesson here is from Abraham Lincoln: You can’t fool all of the people all of the time — even in Massachusetts. It’s a great victory for the people, but it could easily have gone the other way. What if Marsha Coakley had been elected governor? The state would already be on the hook for $5 billion in cost overruns.

Like most flim-flams, the Boston Olympics collapsed abruptly. Perplexing, isn’t it, considering that just last Thursday, Sweaty Steve Pagliuca of Boston 2024 had assured everyone that the Olympics would definitely end in the black, and that even if they didn’t, Boston 2024 had plenty of insurance to cover any shortfalls.

I guess all his promises were, what was that word he kept using on
TV, “hyperbole.”

Boston 2024’s clueless billionaires did accomplish one thing that is almost impossible to do now — they brought the entire city and state together, from Citizens for Limited Taxation on the right to Black Lives Matter on the left, the entire political spectrum spoke as one, in one word, and that word was: “NOOOOOOO!!!!”

My only regret is that I couldn’t make it over to the Globe for the candlelight vigil last evening. How many forests perished over the last few months to print the breathless puff pieces run by the bowtied bum-kissers? (My favorite: “Can David Ortiz Save the Olympics?”). . .

Good for Boston. Reminds me of Denver when it actually won an Olympic bid but the voters said no.

I was just in Boston, and everyone was horrified at the thought of the Olympics, citing the ruined venues and wastelands of dis-used real estate all over the world from Sarajevo to Greece, to Beijing, to Russia.

It was a disaster just waiting to happen, and I’m glad it’s over.

They can cancel the Olympricks so far as I’m concerned. Don’t care for a single bit of it.

I’ve hated them since Munich.

Felt that way about Chicago’s bid. When we lost, I cheered.

When it was still “up in the air” the proposed area was in Quincy, MA, just south of Boston. The only possible area would have been near Marina Bay, which is a huge tract of land that is undeveloped because it was Coast Guard property up until recently. My sister and I hiked the area, and it was all wildflowers and bird sanctuary, with the ocean nearby. Ruins of WW2 harbor defenses and an old airfield that had been Amelia Erhart’s HQ were marked with monuments. It was amazing that we were so close to the city and could only hear the sounds of the birds. The views of Boston were wonderful. If they ruined that with junky Olympic “architecture” it would be horrible.

Thank goodness it won’t be Boston!

Same here. Sounded like a potential nightmare, didn't seem "worth it".

My brother wanted them here though, go figure.

Daley would still be Mayor if we had gotten it, that was supposed to be his "legacy" and he would have stayed on to see it through.

I thought his legacy was selling Chicago’s assets at billion dollar discounts and then going to work as the attorney for those same firms?
