Krauthammer, Brit Hume comes down on Cruz: An act of ‘amazing hypocrisy’ to refuse to attack Trump

Ted Cruz‘s epic battle with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on the Senate floor flowed onto the Fox News set Monday when two influential personalities called out the Texas senator for not going after Donald Trump in the name of party solidarity — but being willing to attack one of his own party’s leaders.

On Fox News’ “Special Report” Monday, commentator Brit Hume accused Cruz of hypocrisy.

“He insisted his stance was born of fidelity to the so-called 11th commandment, made famous by Ronald Reagan, thou shalt not speak ill of any fellow Republican,” Hume said.

“Two days later, Cruz was on the Senate floor calling Republican leader McConnell a liar,” Hume said. “It may have shown Cruz to be an obvious hypocrite, but for one day, at least, he Trumped Trump, and that means mission accomplished.”

Hume was referring to a floor speech Friday when Cruz accused McConnell of misleading him and other Republicans before a vote involving the Export-Import Bank. The public fight continued during a rare session Sunday, when Cruz was criticized — though not by name — by Utah Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch, the most senior Republican in the body.

Later in the show, conservative columnist and author Charles Krauthammer agreed.

“I think Brit Hume was entirely right that it is an act of rather amazing hypocrisy to refuse to attack Trump on the grounds – and these are the grounds that Cruz invoked – of not wanting to attack another Republican, and then, within a few hours or days, to get on the floor of the Senate and to call your own party’s leader a liar,” he said.

Both analysts called it it a strategic move by Cruz to court Trump supporters if Trump should leave the race.

Cruz is building a campaign based on standing apart from the Washington Republican establishment. When he’s drawing fire from political figures like McConnell and Hatch, and media names like Krauthammer and Hume, he’s standing about as far apart from it as he can get.

It’s one thing to not bad-mouth someone because you disagree with a position they’ve taken (Reagans 11th commandment)

It’s a whole different matter calling someone out when they blantanly lie to you and your fellow Republicans.

Isn’t Krauthammer a Democrat who worked for Carter and Mondale?

For years, I've disdained snotty Sour Kraut as well as the human pinstripe, George Will. Throw in sneery, loose-lipped Brit Hume and you have a Triumvirate of snobbery, elitism and lack of common sense.

Attacking establishment Republicans like McConnell and Hatch helps Cruz.

Not attacking Trump helps Cruz when the Donald falters. (And he will falter at some point.)

I’m surprised Hume Doesn’t understand this.

Krauthammer and Brit Hume live in a different world than I do.
They need to get out more.

Hypocrisy???? How many times has Trump lied to Cruz????

It is not hypocrisy to clearly ID one of the main problems with the Republican Party. He hasn’t been trashing any of the other candidates with the possible exception of Bush, who is also richly deserving.

I’m disappointed in Krauthammer and Hume here.

Krauthammer, Hume attack Cruz, because he didn’t attack someone else. Since Kraut and Hume are attacking Cruz, I guess they aren’t fellow Republicans and this isn’t hypocritical.

Trump didn’t lie to Cruz. What is Brit Hume talking about? He shows some hypocrisy of his own by being selective about which candidates he criticizes.

Cruz is entitled to his own opinions, Brit. Stop trying to pressure him into having your opinions and just do a fair interview.

Krauthammer and Hume are Obama policy supporters.

Totally. They cover up for every lie which Obama
and their GiveObamaPower party make.
They have zero, none, no, zed credibility.

I'd invite Brit to have Ted on his show and call him a hypocrite to his face.

Somehow I doubt he has the balls for that.

Thank you very much. Can’t remember which FReeper came up with “FUBO” (FReep You Barack Obama), but I’ve adopted and adapted it for years. It’s universally applicable to libtards and GOPe RINOs alike.
