AUSTIN CITY COUNCIL VOTES TO BAN BBQ RESTAURANTS

“If this resolution passes, we would be forced to close or move. It would destroy Austin barbecue.” says Aaron Franklin, owner of Franklin’s BBQ in Austin.

Austin, Texas has long been a destination for Americans of all stripes in their quest to find the best barbecue in the nation.

However, if the Austin City Council gets their way, food tourism may soon be a thing of the past.

Austin City Council members passed a preliminary plan in April to put restrictions on smoke from barbeque restaurants. Some Austin residents complain of the barbecue smoke saying they can’t enjoy their homes they purchased before some of these restaurants moved in.

The city council’s current proposal will require smoke diffusers and will also limit the amount of time that restaurants can smoke. These restrictions will require at least $100,000 in extra investments for most barbecue restaurants as they will be forced to buy extra smokers along with severely expensive diffusers, and in some cases will have to lease or purchase more property.

I was given a tour of a commercial BBQ kitchen.

Several hundred pounds of meat on trays that rotated slowly over 18 hours in a natural gas low heat oven. The only smoke was from small compartment with a couple of hickory split logs in it.

This kind of operation could not offend neighbors. There was hardly any being emitted.

The concentration of restaurants along Austin’s 6th street, using backyard smoker technology, must be awful thick smoke.

Just NO. There is no better Food smell than BBQ....none.

Makes me hungry just thinking of that smell..

What the heck, are they ok with the smells at the FAIRS, street vendors, etc., all the hot dog smells? I am sure most big cities have street vendors that produce smells, do they object to that?

I hope the Council will just do the right thing and tell them to shove it. BBQ is so yummmmmmmy good.

I hate busybodies with no life, they are everywhere.

I’m sure there would be some special dispensation for minority gay BBQ providers. I mean to make everything equal and level the playing field of course.

All BBQ restaurants move to the area just West of the city limits. Prevailing winds, you know. Let the People’s Republic of Austin Politboro get a whiff of displeasure. he he he

Austlandia has been this way for fifty-odd years.

I think someone could easily make some mini-series out of the comical standards of the town. I’d take a guess that of every 100 city residents....probably eighty-eight smoke marijuana on a daily basis...so it’s a pretty hip and chilled crowd.

The method of cooking the Que is most of the source of the problem but
many will argue it is the basis of the BBQ taste. But as you pointed out
the heat generation could be from a different source other than wood.

This one is easy. Open all the bbq restaurants to hold gay weddings for free. Instant love and affection.

Some budding real-estate mogul will offer locations outside of Austin and Austin will loose. Foowee on the Council, they just don't get how bad they have screwed up.

IMHO it is about having fun and enjoying yourself. These ninny-nannies can't stand when men and women and freedom make choices to make themselves happy. More importantly it is Male-Primal and it is in our DNA, Hunt, Fire. + Meat equals brain growth, survival, and happy women too. Can't have that, they are the ministers of happiness and need to fundamentally change this too.

You will ride your plug in electric bicycle and eat Arugula on your way to the inclusion rallye because I said so is their attitude, I for one have had enough and will tell them so should they get in my face with this lunacy...
