Story That 'Haunted' New Yorkers Since 1964 Becomes a Movie

Kitty Genovese's gruesome killing to become feature film

A legendary New York City crime that once inspired soul-searching and public debate is finally coming to the big screen. Spoiler alert: It's called "37," after the number of witnesses who allegedly watched, listened, or did nothing while Queens resident Kitty Genovese was raped and fatally stabbed. Starring "True Detective" actor Michael Potts and "Orange is the New Black" actress Samira Wiley, the 18-day shoot is triggering strong reactions and memories among neighbors, the New York Times reports. "This story had the greatest impact on me as child," a resident said during filming last week. "The whole thing was so horrifying." The shoot is about a mile from the actual crime scene, but a store owner still complained that the neighborhood has already been maligned enough.

The original Times account made mistakes, including the likely number of witnesses (it wasn't 37) and the notion that no one helped (a neighbor comforted Genovese in her final moments, and calls were made to police). But quotes attributed to Genovese—like "Oh, my God, he stabbed me! Please help me! Please help me!”—reverberate to this day and even rankle neighbors of the current shoot. Actress Christina Brucato, who's portraying Genovese, says she "felt bad" about keeping a neighbor up all night during the murder scene: "They said I couldn’t go all out, but really, it was terrifying," she says. "I couldn’t help but let out some screams." It's the first film by 28-year-old Danish director Puk Grasten, who says "it’s nice to be from the outside: I can look at something and say, 'This is not supposed to be normal.'"

I’m female, and took the job as C.O. when I was 33. Moseley used to have to pass through the “wire gate” post once or twice a day to get to his job. I was assigned to work that job fairly regularly. Because he thought he was a ladies’ man, Moseley would try to converse with me on his way through the gate. I knew what a scum bag he was and made it perfectly clear that he was to move along. Offers were required to wear name tags with our first initial and last name. One day as he was passing through the gate, Moseley asked me what the K. stood for on my name tag. I told him it was none of his business and he went on his way. After he’d gone, I realized I should have said “Kitty” just to get a reaction from him. That’s not my first name, but I would loved to have seen his face. All these years later I’m still sorry I never thought of it at the time.

The problem in New York City in 1964 and to a great extent today is that the NYPD has effectively criminalized the notion of coming to someone else’s aid.

Yes, and that’s sad, but it’s the folks in state capitols who write the laws, not police departments.

Yep, helping someone is a great way to drop $100,000 on a defense attorney.

As New York Mayor De Blasio has discovered the fact of life is that he answers to the NYPD. They do not answer to him.

The NYPD and too many police departments these days more closely resemble the paramilitary police gangs of Latin America than they do anything of the USA. They're not accountable to anyone else.

The Pink Floyd song, "Dogs of War", comes to mind with the part about how their masters don't control what they do.

Excellent point. I stand in awe of that argument.

Can’t believe that POS is still alive. Too bad Kitty didn’t carry a gun or knife with her.

It’s interesting, I was just talking about this YESTERDAY with my 2^ boss. He was saying that today, people are even LESS inclined to get involved, and instead whip out their cell phones to record the action for YouTube/Internet fame.

Either way, horrible horrible little people.

Should make one about the recent killing where a group of people just watched a man get stabbed to death on the DC Metro.

Thanks for posting that.

The public was whipped up into a frenzy because of our “delightful” media.

Wow.

All I had to see was “Haunted New Yorkers since 64...” and I knew it was the Kitty Genovese story.

Guess I’m old... and a New Yorker at heart...

Sad.
