Pataki, Christie, Perry, Graham, Santorum ... let's be honest, none of these guys has any chance of winning the Republican nomination. Zero. (They're all bland, boring, and politically correct.) In fact, any of them will be lucky just to make the "top 10" cut.
So what's their motivation? Cabinet position? (Like Lindsay Graham is gonna talk Trump into making him Secretary of Defense in exchange for his 1% of the voters??)
Or are they GOP-e suicide moles being pushed only to take out any non-approved frontrunner? Designated troublemakers?
I always say follow the money. Somehow I have to believe there is some financial gain to these guys running.
You might as well add all 16 to the list...
They are in the race because they are politicians. All politicians hear negative and positive comments, but I imagine they discount the negative, i.e. “You can’t please everyone.” The positive comments come from friends, employees, political connections, etc.. Those positive commentators likely tell the politician they are special, that the country needs them, that they are the best person for the job, etc..
A lot of politicians start at the state level and work their way up. For those that reach US senator or governor, what elective office is left? The presidency. No chance of winning? That’s just the naysayers. Anything can happen. After all, these people have won office before, they generally know how to campaign, and polls are always subject to change.
Resume’ enhancement.
Adding the words, ‘former presidential candidate’ to your moniker, helps bring in the cash when your dismal, undistinguished political career is over.
This is one of Trump's biggest cards, he is perhaps the ONLY person in Washington who cannot be bought. He made this statement when he announced his net worth. The money you may get from the taxpayer for running for president is chump change, compared to his net worth.
CC’s list was comprehensive with the exception of your addition. I think it is a mixture of all of that. The additional ego boost of running around the country you have a chance and getting out to see some of the people you’ve convinced that you could be President. But deep down, these guys are in it for any of the reasons listed above.
Democrat strategy to win the election....talk 30+ (R) candidates into running while you only have 2 or 3 (D)s running. Isn’t it evident?
They’re angling for cabinet or other senior positions in a potential Republican Administration. Graham for sure wants to be Secretary of Defense.
LOL. Like the lottery. Can’t wim if you don’t play.
If a national campaign is a billion dollar campaign, what is a couple of million to draw support away from a conservative candidate that could win?
The frontrunner a year+ out is unlikely to be the eventual nominee.
Why would you want to limit the field now?
What’s odder still is that there’s closer to 100 candidates who have actually filed to run. (Bush’s old head of the IRS and a lot of perennial cranks, as far as I can tell.) The 16 have been declared the “major” ones as it is.
Graham is clearly in it as a favorite son, intended to keep a conservative (e.g., Cruz) from winning in So. Carolina—and therefore getting any momentum.
Were Carson and Fiorina quasi-courted to show how “diverse” the Republicans are?
Most pols are narcissists, and so they need limelight wherever they can get it.
They are able to keep X amount of monies (don’t know the whole of it) to use in their other campaigns. It’s quick and easy bucks for, let say Linda Graham’s next senate reelection campaign or Chris Chubseys next gubernatorial shot.
[I always say follow the money.]
They get to keep their leftover campaign stash - a politician retirement fund of sorts.
The Republican Party has no national leader, or anything close to it. This emboldens the Lollipop Brigade.
But at least the Republicans have DIVERSITY, which, we are told, is the source of America’s strength and dynamism.
The Democrats have worn out, elderly white socialists.
Hey if you’re a Canadian, you can’t even vote here! So what do you care? What’s YOUR motivation?
Go home and watch a Terrance & Phillip cartoon.
With Trump throwing hand grenades around, the others need to follow suit with bombs of their own in order to “stand out” from the pack. Good!
Let’s start debates on dozens or even hundreds of topics! Political Correctness be damned! America has a lot of repairs to make and maybe these hopeless wannabes can throw some sparks into the right powder kegs before they fade away.
There is plenty of time for the cream to rise to the top. Enjoy the show!
