Hundreds get free haircuts, hot dogs and more in Ferguson

FERGUSON • Tiahesia Palmer was checking out some of the free services, but her son wanted a haircut.

So the Ferguson resident signed up Isiah, 7, to get his head shaved at the haircut tent at Saturday’s “Day of Hope.” He took off his ballcap and sat silently while a woman with the Elaine Steven Beauty College cleaned up around his ears.

Palmer smiled. Wearing an “I-heart-FERG” T-shirt, she was happy that her community had attracted the event.

Hundreds attended the festivities at Forestwood Park in Ferguson to receive free goods and services. The city and about 40 local churches, other agencies and Convoy of Hope, a Springfield, Mo.-based organization, coordinated the event.

About 600 volunteers signed up to help. They distributed more than 1,000 pairs of shoes, 5,000 bags of groceries and 10,000 bottles of water. Peppy volunteers said, “Good morning,” and asked, “How are you?” as part of an effort to offer residents a stress-free day.

The family-friendly event follows a year of stress in Ferguson, following the fatal shooting Aug. 9 of Michael Brown Jr. by a police officer. Protesters continue to call for the resignation of Mayor James Knowles III after a recall effort failed in June. A new interim police chief was announced last week, after the city’s chief resigned in March in the wake of a scathing report by the Department of Justice.

With red-and-white striped tents, Saturday’s event had a carnival-like atmosphere. Music played while kids jumped in a bounce house and threw balls at jugs.

Attendees were treated to a variety of complimentary services, including giveaways, health screenings and job services. There was even a free lunch: hot dogs with pepper jack cheese, chips and a drink.

Same here. Every other Saturday (not tonight) I get really drunk and cut my own hair. Or maybe not too drunk.
#6 all over, #4 in back and sides, #2 sideburns, beard and temples. In between, thinner scissors since my hair is as thick as a Cairn terrier’s double-coats.
Haven’t paid for a haircut in years and happier with results than Great Clips.
You shave yourself, right? Well, there you go.

Coordinating is NOT the same as 'paying for'... Since there's not a lot of free lunches in life, I wonder who paid for lunch...

I have no idea who paid for lunch however given the location and circumstances I’d bet taxpayers did in the end.

Free stuff and only hundreds showed up.

More than that showed up from all over the nation last time.

Perpetuation of the victim mentality. All they are doing is introducing the very young in the area to the entitlements they will demand through violence the older they get.

Imagine you are in a sieged fortress with lions outside. The only way to keep them from storming the walls and killing everyone in a feeding frenzy is to feed them every day. Day in day out. When you stop, they aren’t going to remember how nice you were. And while you’re feeding them, you still can’t go outside unprotected because they will kill you for the fun of it. It is their nature, it is their way.

Several of my friends have boys in their late teens.

Sorriest bunch of loser I have ever seen. They don’t work, they smoke pot, doing horribly in high school and when I ask them what are they doing after graduation - IF they graduate - they shrug and say “I don’t know.” Several have probation officers and there will be at least 2 GEDs.

I have known their mothers for decades and they are good people. I am trying to figure out what has happened and the best I can come up with is that the kids were given everything their whole life and they have never had to face any consequences when they screw up. Also, they are allowed to act on ‘mediocre is just fine’.

So, I look for these kids to be in jail at some point, after fathering a passel of losers, and their parents will spend their retirement and pensions raising another generation of losers.

God help us.

Privilege is what you win when you guilt the ones toeing the line into believing that they have privilege.

Strange.....just the article itself was grayed out when I clicked the link....just rows of grayed "bars" where the article should be.

Has this happened to anyone else? Was the article removed? My computer is functioning fine.
