The initiative to curb gun violence in Milwaukee announced last week by state and local officials is a necessary and welcome step that may help reduce the sharp spike in homicides and shootings the city has experienced this year. Focusing on the aggressive prosecution of gun crimes, much like the successful Operation Ceasefire did when it was launched 15 years ago, this push should give authorities more of the the tools they need.
The day the initiative was announced, Milwaukee matched its homicide total for all of last year with the death of a 17-year-old girl. While the total number is stunning, we should all remember that it represents 89 (as of Friday) individual tragedies with families torn at their hearts and neighborhoods devastated. Far too many victims have been children; as have far too many of the shooters. That number also should remind the entire community that curbing such violence is not just a job for authorities but for everyone, as Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett and Police Chief Edward Flynn have repeatedly said.
The law enforcement effort the Milwaukee Gun Violence Reduction Initiative offers a good starting point.
Mayor Tom Barrett convened the state and local agencies earlier this year when the city began experiencing an "unacceptable level of violence."
Attorney General Brad Schimel worked with the Legislature's Joint Finance Committee to secure additional funding for two assistant attorneys general who will join four prosectors in a specialized unit at the Milwaukee County district attorney's office. The state Justice Department also is funneling $50,000 in federal grant money to the Milwaukee Police Department for overtime, while the Police Department is dedicating 12 experienced detectives to the effort.

Milwaukee introduces program to reduce gun violence.
FReep mail me if you want on, or off, this Wisconsin interest ping list.
Methinks that they could start by allowing the MPD to chase and arrest perps when they witness a crime.
Not effectively dealing with the violent people are why these initiatives are doomed to failure. You can bet the farm that it won’t be long until the focus is on the gun instead of the violent criminal. Even if you start to deal effectively with the violent people, the rallying cry will then become how “racist” the initiative is by putting away so many minorities. And the vicious circle spins again...
arrest violent felons and put them away forever.....put to death murderers. quick and easy....the wild west is NOW. during the actual wild west...perps were liquidated quickly and it wasn’t as bad then as it is now.
First step: Milwaukee needs a new D.A. and a new mayor.
With the Democrat Party policies of the past forty to fifty years firmly in place and militating that no one, ever, needs to take responsibility for anything at all, any decrease in lawlessness is problematic, at best.
Of course, pols and office holders are always happy having more cash thrown at them after being confiscated from working taxpayers, but it won’t change anything.
America’s entrenched socialism marches inexorably onward.
There are already many many gun control laws on the books, even using a gun in a crime is a felony. But when the perp comes before the judge, there is always a plea down to a misdemeanor or far lesser charge, or worse the perp is just released. Using a gun in a crime in Milwaukee is never enforced, just as a perp who flees in a vehicle is never chased.
More gun laws make libs feel better, but letting the poor disadvantaged perp go free makes libs swell with pride. Which is why Milwaukee’s murder and crime rate is soaring and spreading.
Liberal logic on display again in the Urinal-Spentitall:
If a liberal idea doesn’t work then we just need more of it.
Whenever I see stories like this about a city’s surging murder rate and how their “gun initiative” or what ever, the first thin I do is go to Wikipedia and check the Demographics section. Well, well. Milwaukee’s demographics are:
Racial composition
White (Non-Hispanic) 37.0%
Black or African American 40.0%
Hispanic or Latino (of any race) 17.3%
Asian 3.5%
Someagun!
—yep—no mention ,of course, that outside of the Milwaukee “black” community , the Wisconsin homicide rate is usually one of the lowest in the country—
1-Put the criminals in jail.
2-Quit inviting more criminals into our country.
oh...and way back at the beginning....
1-Put God back in the center of our lives and our culture.
2-Quit pretending Fathers aren’t important.
3-Yes, there is a “Right” and a “Wrong” and “Wrong” has consequences.
Duuuuuuuuuuh................
And exactly WHEN do you guys EXECUTE a murderer???
HUH??
Just asking.
Some of you folks seem to be reading something different than I read.
What I see here is a Liberal city wanting to aggressively prosecute gun crime, something Conservatives have long contended actually works to reduce violent crime. This initiative targets the PERP, not the inanimate GUN. I didn’t see a hint of gun control in the article.
So, what are you complaining about? The Libs are coming around to our way of thinking on this issue.
Of course they will agonize over the jails filling with violent criminals, many of whom are minorities. But the obvious drop in crime, the safer streets, may just enlighten them to the idea of more prisons & longer sentences - another Conservative idea.
What baffles me is how these Liberal politicians stumbled on to such a good idea. I guess a blind hog does occasionally find an acorn.
Milwaukee - the city that gave us the term, “Hold muh beer and watch this”....
” The initiative to curb gun violence...”
The way they state the problem guarantees their solution won’t work.
Now if they had said “The initiative to curb thugs...” I would have given them a better chance.
So they are in effect proposing to put more black men in prison longer? I wonder what the #BlackLiveMatter protestors will think?
I wonder if they will next propose that the police shoot any black man in public with a gun?
In addition to this gun crime initiative, our school systems need to implement a Law & Ethics program in our schools from kindergarten to graduation.
It is obvious kids are not learning right from wrong at home or on the streets.
If done properly, this could prevent a lot of crime. If done by the “johnny has 2 mommies” crowd, not so much. Still, SOMEBODY has teach kids that stealing, lying, cheating, raping, & murdering is wrong, & not in their best interest to do.
I believe that humans are best civilized early, ideally before they start school, but that opportunity extends into grade school. After then, only providence may save the kid & society.
Short life sentences for all violent felonies.
