Trump and His Apologists (Wall Street Journal Editorial)
Wall Street Journal ^ | July 19, 2015 | Editorial

Posted on 07/20/2015 9:23:55 AM PDT by rickyrikardo

The summer Trump polling spurt has nonetheless been instructive in exposing a growing problem on the political right. All too many conservatives, including some magazine editors, have been willing to overlook his hucksterism as he’s risen in the polls. They pretend that he deserves respect because he’s giving voice to some deep disquiet or anger in the American electorate.

But America has rarely lacked for demagogues willing to exploit public discontents. William Jennings Bryan won three Democratic presidential nominations running against eastern elites. In 1948 Henry Wallace ran as a Soviet sympathizer while Strom Thurmond won 39 electoral votes running as a segregationist. Either one would have been a disaster as President.

As a standard-bearer for conservative ideas, Mr. Trump would likewise be a catastrophe. His only discernible principle is the promotion of his personal brand. His main message seems to be that because he’s rich and doesn’t care what anyone thinks, he can afford to tell everyone to go to hell. Some Americans may find it satisfying 16 months from Election Day to tell pollsters they’d vote for him, but that doesn’t mean conservative elites should validate this nonsense.

From another thread:

The elite establishment press is joining forces with the elite establishment politicians to destroy Trump.

Anyone who can read should be able to see this. Of course, they’ll need to be smart enough to read cursive and most voters aren’t.

If you read the Wall Street Journal’s editorials about immigration, you will find them extolling the virtues of immigration and HARDLY mentioning the problems this country faces with ILLEGALS.

This is the same issue I have with such “conservative” columnists as Linda Chavez and Michael Medved.

Barack Obama would be embarrassed to go after this many straw men.

All too many conservatives, including some magazine editors, have been willing to overlook his hucksterism as he’s risen in the polls.

On the contrary. Most are taking him with a grain of salt given his past. They are merely responding to his willingness to address specific problems and issues.

They pretend that he deserves respect because he’s giving voice to some deep disquiet or anger in the American electorate.

Pretend? What does 'deserving respect' have to do with telling the truth? McCain and Romney 'deserved respect' and failed miserably because they took the coward's way out.

But America has rarely lacked for demagogues willing to exploit public discontents. William Jennings Bryan / Henry Wallace / Strom Thurmond etc.

Ancient history and hypotheticals as logic? Gigot, you are losing it - rapidly.

How, precisely, can someone relating facts be considered a demagogue, especially compared to the nonstop demagogues in the Democratic party?

As a standard-bearer for conservative ideas, Mr. Trump would likewise be a catastrophe. His only discernible principle is the promotion of his personal brand. His main message seems to be that because he’s rich and doesn’t care what anyone thinks, he can afford to tell everyone to go to hell.

And this ability drives the Beltway class insane, because he won't knuckle under, take orders from the Bush/Rove axis, or play the 'I'm sorry' cap-in-hand game demanded by the media.

Some Americans may find it satisfying 16 months from Election Day to tell pollsters they’d vote for him, but that doesn’t mean conservative elites should validate this nonsense.

Ahhhh - the ELITES! The (self-) important people! Now we finally reach the truth. The WSJ under Gigot are barely discernible from David Brooks.

The Wall Street Journal is the mouthpiece of The Cheap Labor Express. They will always slant everything towards amnesty candidates and illegal aliens and especially their employers.

Too bad the WSJ geniuses don’t have the balls to say so.

They’re correct about Trump....in the long run he isn’t the one we want.

He is who Obama WANTS to be, but Obama hasn’t earned his wealth.

“....and HARDLY mentioning the problems this country faces with ILLEGALS.”

This is a systemic problem with the media as a whole. Only focusing on the “moment” and deliberately ignoring the REAL PROBLEMS that should be the issues of discussion and elements of the candidate platforms. So far, and it is early yet, we have heard only a couple of candidates (and their media supporters) really get into the disastrous state of this country and what the Dems have done (and continue to do) TO IT.

Politics over substance, must go. Focus on who and what is killing this country must take center stage.

The ever dwindling @WSJ which is worth about 1/10 of what it was purchased for, is always hitting me politically. Who cares!

Power goes to people’s heads. Of course the editorial board of the WSJ knows that to be true in the political arena. What they seem to miss is that it is true in other areas as well. The power to influence and control people and their elections is a drug to the media, even conservative media. They will do and say anything to get more than their one vote, in essence, by smearing the ones they deem unworthy.

I don’t care if they like Trump or not. The ridiculous ganging up on him, though, is very lopsided and exaggerated and all about knocking him out so their favorite candidate can take his place. It is ugly and anti-republic.

I honestly think that a lot of Trump’s support is ANTI-GOPe than anything. (I know that’s part of the appeal for me)

I’m sure they would totally change their minds if The Donald came to his senses and welcomed the illegals with open arms.

This is a highly coordinated effort to force the destruction of the middle class for the benefit of the stock prices. Just my opinion.

The conservative elites the WSJ presents to us as a group whose validation we should be concerned about. Well, they let the cat out-of-the-bag if it has been the bag at all in recent years.

Actually, they validated that they consider themselves the elite and what unacceptable strains of conservatives think not only doesn't matter, but should be silenced.
