Trump Responds to Backlash Over His Criticism of John McCain's War Record

Donald Trump is facing a firestorm of controversy after his comments about Sen. John McCain's war record.

"He's not a war hero," the presidential candidate said at the 4th annual Family Leadership Summit in Iowa yesterday. "He's a war hero 'cause he was captured. I like people that weren't captured."

Many of Trump's GOP rivals have slammed his comments and called for him to back out of the 2016 race.

Trump said on "Fox and Friends Weekend" today that those calls are "total nonsense" and pointed out that he's still leading in the polls.

"This was picked up by the opponents that aren't registering in the polls," Trump said. "Everybody knows it, and everybody sees it."

Trump explained that he's upset with McCain because the Arizona senator has done a terrible job at helping veterans.

So now Trump has lowered himself below scumbag status and elevated the most hated Republican senator to hero status. Just great.

McCain’s primary challenger now has no chance, Bush will benefit as well as Trump’s registered Democrat pals..including the Clinton crime family.

Trump is beyond sleazy.

Hold on there. McCain spent $21M on a primary in Arizona. A primary that he had ensured would be an open primary (and still is). He crapped all over JD Hayworth, but we almost had him beat until he called in Sarah Palin for endorsement, which she gave. So conservatives did not "hold their noses" and vote for McCain. He walked through the door once he dispatched of his only opponent using money he raised off Palin that wasn't used in his losing race in 08. And she helped him again.

He doesn't represent Arizona and the only people who claim him are La Raza and the idiots who moved here from California, so don't blame us. The same thing has happened with his butt-boy Jeff Flake, who we are now stuck with forever as well. This state will never see a closed, legitimate primary again. It's happening all over the country.

Listening to Trump I believe he meant to say that the men who did not get captured are every bit the heroes attributed to McCain but they do not get the credit like McCain because they did not get captured. He had a hard time verbalizing it due to the badgering of Luntz repeating “He’s a war hero” over and over.

Yep. The Democrats are coming to McCains defense. Kerry is one of them. That tells me all I have to know. They want a RINO to run against so they can win again. Even if the RINO wins, the Democrats win. Like Newt Gingrich said on Hannity radio a few nights ago. The fact that Trump is out in front tells you how mad the American people are.

He said McCain was a hero because he was captured; only because he was captured and not necessarily because he was heroic, any more than any of the other POWs. McCain never fails to push his POW status as a mark of heroism and as a reason he knows all about all. There are plenty of real heros who have acted heroically and do not push it as their ticket to fame and fortune. The term is applied too liberally these days. Colin Powell was for years after called the “hero of the Gulf War”. Hero my ass, he was the CJCS, not a soldier or general at the front. Benedict Arnold was a real hero of the American Revolution without much doubt; but he is also the foremost traitor to the American Revolution. Heroism is found in selfless actions done for the greater cause or group regardless of the risk. McCain was a POW. He survived as all of the POWs were taught to do. Some did not. That is a mark of honor and respect but not automatically heroic. One’s actions at a point in time may be heroic, but they do not give one a free pass for whatever other lies and deeds they may use to promote themselves. McCain has shown by his actions since coming back from captivity that he is hardly heroic, a scheming and sometimes traitorous POS who has used his POW status as a club to keep everyone in awe of him. It has always been BS and exposing his “hero” status as BS is warranted.

"I am not a fan of John McCain because he has done so little for our Veterans and he should know better than anybody what the Veterans need, especially in regards to the VA. He is yet another all talk, no action politician who spends too much time on television and not enough time doing his job and helping the Vets. He is also allowing our military to decrease substantially in size and strength, something which should never be allowed to happen.

Furthermore, he was extremely disrespectful to the thousands upon thousands of people, many of whom happen to be his constituents, that came to listen to me speak about illegal immigration in Phoenix last week by calling them "crazies".

These were not "crazies"---these were great American citizens.

I have great respect for all those who serve in our military including those that weren't captured and are also heroes.

I want to strengthen our military and take care of our Veterans. I want to MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN especially for those that serve to protect our freedom. I am fighting for our Veterans....
