In January of 2014, John Chisholm had a choice. The Milwaukee district attorney's John Doe investigation into a slate of conservative groups in Wisconsin had just been ground to a halt by Judge Gregory Peterson, who overturned a number of subpoenas that had been granted the previous October.
Given Peterson's common-sense reasoning in quashing the subpoenas, Chisholm and his chief investigator, Francis Schmitz, could have called off the investigation. After all, continuing to appeal the decision would take valuable financial resources and staff time, with little chance for success. And Chisholm already had been embarrassed by a previous John Doe investigation into Gov. Scott Walker's county executive office that ended up showing no wrongdoing by the governor.
But Chisholm decided to become the Captain Ahab of Wisconsin politics, chasing Walker's white whale to his own eventual demise. Unexpectedly, when Chisholm's flaccid case went forward, its targets decided they had had enough and began to fight back. And in doing so, it turned the Milwaukee district attorney into a national laughingstock, eventually ending in complete exoneration for his targets.
Last week, in offering vindication for groups that Chisholm had alleged violated campaign finance law, the state Supreme Court detailed what a stunning case of prosecutorial misconduct the John Doe eventually became.
The majority decision relayed the previously told stories of how innocent peoples' homes had been raided in "paramilitary"-style pre-dawn sting operations; how they were denied access to attorneys, forced to remain quiet about what they had endured and made to hand over retirement income statements, personal financial account information, personal letters and family photos. As Justice David Prosser wrote, the raids were "so broad and so extensive that they make the fruits of the legendary Watergate break-in look insignificant by comparison."
And the victims' crime? Participating in constitutionally protected political speech while also being conservative.

Chisholm needs to be a PROSECUTED laughingstock
Chisholm, John Chisholm. Weary, saddle worn.
And the Milwaukee District Attorney's Office will hang out a sign saying "now hiring."
This is a good guys win, anti-Chisholm piece.
Not to mention bankrupt. The people he wronged need to go after his pension.
Chisholm Nifonged himself. The whirlwind had not been reaped yet, but it will...
He should be disbarred and then prosecuted by whichever disciplinary body has the power to do so.
The author of this is a good conservative writer. Surprised that the JS even ran it.
TThe JS accepted all of Chisolms leaks. They were cheerleading for him. Their writer was so in the tank for Chisolm that he might as well have had his office in Chisholms office. They are beyond no friend they are Democrats with by-lines.
The author alludes to it, but it should be strongly noted that while this excrement DA was chasing Walker violent crime in Milwaukee has exploded. Our murders are 2x what they were last year. Time and resources to attack your political enemy, nothing to protect the innocent citizens from crime. I spit.
Tough article on Chisholm from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinal. Will wonders never cease? It seems that they are blaming Chisholm for Walker’s popularity.
FReep Mail me if you want on, or off, this Wisconsin interest ping list.
And Prosser is normally a Mr. Milquetoast. Very quiet and soft spoken.
This article is going to make Colleen Chisholm cry . . .
The JS is a commie rag. They are protecting their pal, describing him as a laughingstock. He should be in jail.
Why isn’t this guy in jail?
