I have been trying to figure out how the five were killed and confess that I have not watched any coverage of this on tv. I don’t know if they have shown the Reserve facility at all. All I had pictured from reading accounts of this jihadi attack on the US is strip mall type recruiting centers. So I just googled the Chattanooga training location that is located behind a black fence and along a public river walk. It looks like the Palestinian engineer rammed his car through the fence and got out and started shooting. One of the victims had enough time to recognize an active shooter situation and to text that message to his girlfriend. And that is all I have figured out from the limited info.
I also visited the training center’s Facebook page. They have posted several warnings to be vigilant and situationally aware in the last three weeks.
According to the FBI, this is just another random shooting. The shooter was not affiliated with or directed by any radical organization. WaPo commenced its article with the line “As investigators sought to decipher the motives of the gunman who targeted U.S. troops in Chattanooga, Tenn. ...”
What is there to “decipher”? Are these people retarded?
Here’s what is really infuriating about this situation. After a Muslim texts verses from the Quran (”Whosoever shows enmity to a friend of Mine, then I have declared war against him”) and goes on a shooting spree, we are told that it is unfair to think that this is any way related to Islam. After all, most Muslims are not murderous. Indeed, it is unfair to smear all Muslims as being murderous and hateful. However, when a white psychopath who poses with a Confederate battle flag goes on a shooting spree, we are told that somehow reflects the hateful and murderous tendencies of all whites who deviate ever so slightly from the submissive, Democratic socialist ideal, particularly those who are not instantly offended by the stars and bars.
I fear for Steyn - these jerkwads with sudden-Jihad syndrome will only get bolder as the nature of their murderous deeds is obscured by the politicians and their media toadies, and just as they started targeting the high-profile individuals in Europe who had the guts to state the truth, I expect Steyn and Pamela Geller and a few others will start to attract unwanted attention. And I don’t expect Steyn has the resources to maintain the security he deserves, nor does he have corporate backing to supply it.
Mark Steyn is performing a great service. No, he's not taking a gun and standing outside a recruiting center. He's plying his craft and his talent...which is the formulation and dissemination of ideas and words to the general populace.
In this battle we all use what God gave us to use, sometimes it's not much, sometimes it's considerable. We do what we can. Steyn can write, and write well.
Without further amplification let me put forward the simple fact that the tracts, pamphlets and various writings of Thomas Paine and others like him inspired and stimulated the colonists to declare and fight for independence from Great Britain...and win!
In certain contexts, the written word is often as powerful as a gun, in some cases, even more so.

Please, no offense, but I am in the military, and I do not want civilians guarding us anywhere. We are all perfectly cable of defending ourselves if given the chance. The President or Congress could fix this in a heartbeat, but I don’t expect it to change until after Obama.
From a terrorist’s perspective, it would be a great idea. I could join your guard group with an AR, kill you and continue to kill military members—a twofer! I understand and appreciate the sentiment, but sentiment is not what we need. We need leadership, and that is completely gone in this country.
All military installations have been on an enhanced security posture for at least several weeks. I’m sure that the TV trucks had access to the strip mall, but not at the Reserve Center. Enhanced security without an armed response capability, just allows the yellow crime tape to go up more quickly.
Inept governance screams out for citizen intervention(vigilantes.)
Steyn says it!
“If you seriously think this is a senseless act of senselessly senseless violence, [instead of an act of terror/war]then you’re the one who’s senseless. This isn’t a harmless banality one can forgive in the stress of the moment. It’s part of the reason we’re losing.”
“Screw the cakes and balloons. We who did not know them cannot mourn them: That is for their friends and family. The nation’s duty is to avenge them - so that they did not die in vain.”
And, in your heart of hearts, you know that is absolutely the very last thing on this President's mind...
In days gone by almost 70 years ago.....I remember learning a saying in my school days.
"The Pen Is Mightier Than The Sword"
Inept government is what we keep electing.
I am all for citizens arming themselves and being prepared, but, the military needs to deal with military matters. There are so many problems right now, I can’t even begin to express my disgust with our “leadership.” Our country is in for terrible times, and everyone would be better served getting right with God. His vengeance is sure and just.
Always a “senseless” attack. Just what is a sensible attack?
Bump....
I like Mark Steyn. He is a fine humorist and like most humorists he has a deeply pessimistic streak. Lately it has infected the way he writes about America. We need someone who is going to help craft solutions - not someone who is in the depths of depression.
I never suggested civilians arm themselves and defend military installations. I asked an ironic question about Mark Steyn.
I agree
Apologies; I see I DID suggest Americans manning military installations. Many hours after posting and I forgot what I had written. Again, apologies.
Sooooo right and so well said.
Not a problem. We are all upset. Our country is in a tailspin and all that we value is being destroyed. God bless you ND thanks for your passion. If only those in leadership had half of it!
