Ted Cruz and Donald Trump to meet Wednesday in New York
Washington Post ^ | July 14 at 6:34 PM | Robert Costa

Sen. Ted Cruz (Tex.) and real-estate mogul Donald Trump -- each running for the Republican presidential nomination as anti-establishment outsiders -- are cultivating an already chummy relationship at this early stage of the 2016 race and will huddle Wednesday in New York.

The meeting was confirmed by Republicans familiar with both campaigns who requested anonymity to discuss private conversations. Aides to Cruz declined to comment, as did Trump representatives.

The meeting will take place at Trump Tower, the gleaming Manhattan skyscraper where Trump has for decades managed his business endeavors, according to knowledgeable Republicans. The building now serves as the headquarters for Trump’s national political operation.

The conclave is the latest sign of budding solidarity between the contenders, who have been friendly for several years and who have put forceful critiques of illegal immigration and their party’s establishment at the center of their bids.

In recent weeks, Cruz has defended remarks Trump made on immigrants over the past month that have drawn rebukes from leading Democrats and Republicans. Trump said in his announcement speech that when "Mexico sends its people," it sends people who are "bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists."

While other Republicans called Trump’s words "offensive and inaccurate" (Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida) or "extraordinarily ugly" (former Florida governor Jeb Bush), Cruz praised Trump as someone who is "terrific" and "speaks the truth."

Asked about Cruz in an interview over the weekend, Trump told The Washington Post, "I really respect him for saying what he did."

Earlier this month on CNN, Trump said, "I shouldn't say this because, I assume, he's an opponent, but the fact is he was very brave in coming out."

Cruz has previously met with the mogul at Trump Tower, mostly during fundraising swings through New York.

Republicans close to Cruz said the first-term senator is intent on staying cozy with Trump

“I still don’t think Trump will stay in the race, but when he folds, Ted Cruz could be the beneficiary of some of the Donald’s bucks. So it may be wise for the Senator from a financial standpoint to cultivate a good relationship with Trump.”

I agree. If Trump holds a true course I’m with him. I think Cruz should be following that dialogue and energy white on rice. The way I’m thinking, is if Patton only gets us to the Rhine, Bradley can take us the rest of the way to Berlin.

But both would be energy and structure this country needs. It all depends on how these two connect. I’m hoping concern for the country overrides all obstacles. Let it be a blessing, Lord.

I hope they discuss how they can team up and take the Republican Party back from the GOPe and return it to the people.

"We don't intend to turn the Republican Party over to the traitors in the battle just ended. We will have no more of those candidates who are pledged to the same goals as our opposition and who seek our support. Turning the Party over to the so-called moderates wouldn’t make any sense at all." -- President Ronald Reagan

Yet the fool picked Bush, and ensured exactly that until this very day.

they need to team up to utterly destroy Jeb Bush, and then see what happens. The rest of the field are losers. It must be Cruz or Trump - or both - or we have no chance.

Trump is #1 in the polls so I guess he has the leverage here. With Trump it’s all about LEVERAGE.

Maybe Trump will use his "leverage" to get Cruz to match his $100K donation to the corrupt Clinton Fund.

Just saying.

OK lets start a poll as to what they are going to say:

Ted: “Lets give Jebbie a wedgie and then push Marco and Scotty in the pool and divvy up whats left”

The Donald: “ Together we could be Yuge.”

The question in my view is whether he thinks he actually has a shot, or he’s content to play the trojan horse for jebito. Nothing like ambition to scuttle the best laid plans.

But you’re no doubt correct on the k street connection. Frankly all with the exceptions of Trump, Carson, and Fiorina would be somewhat tainted by k street. Some more than others.

Obviously Cruz sees Trump as a potential donor.

Most likely a tactical mistake on his part. Trump is snake venom.

“Too late. Most of them have already pissed into the wind.”

If there are two coalitions emerging, and I think thst may be what we’re seeing, then of course several have already pissed in the wind...because they’re part of the opposing coalition.

Cruz and Trump are obviously the two core participants of one “main street coalition.” Jebito, Christie creme, rubio, linda, pataki and perry are pretty safe bets for the k street coalition.

Too funny.

One thing to observe is that this is a person who sees deals and potential deals everywhere. So it would be natural for him to try to make a deal where others see none.

My take is Trump is planning on forming a coalition between several against the gopee. He understands its Rove and company who the group will have to defeat

I wonder if there is even more. Why not run a completely unconventional campaign with an implied cabinet if elected?
