Pope calls unfettered capitalism 'the dung of the devil'

Pope Francis on Thursday launched a blistering attack on the "new colonialism" of austerity, describing unfettered capitalism as “the dung of the devil” and apologising for the Catholic church's role in the conquest of indigenous populations in the Americas.

He delivered a powerful mea culpa on the part of the church in the highlight of his South American pilgrimage, "humbly" begging forgiveness during an encounter in Bolivia with indigenous groups and other activists and in the presence of Bolivia's first-ever indigenous president, Evo Morales.

The first Latin American pope noted that church leaders in the past had acknowledged that "grave sins were committed against the native peoples of America in the name of God." St. John Paul II, for his part, apologized to the continent's indigenous for the "pain and suffering" caused during the 500 years of the church's presence in the Americas during a 1992 visit to the Dominican Republic.

But the Pope went further and said he was doing so with "regret."

"I would also say, and here I wish to be quite clear, as was St. John Paul II: I humbly ask forgiveness, not only for the offenses of the church herself, but also for crimes committed against the native peoples during the so-called conquest of America," he said to applause from the crowd.

Then deviating from his prepared script, he added: "I also want for us to remember the thousands and thousands of priests who strongly opposed the logic of the sword with the power of the cross. There was sin, and it was plentiful. But we never apologized, so I now ask for forgiveness. But where there was sin, and there was plenty of sin, there was also an abundant grace increased by the men who defended indigenous peoples."

I guess the idea of irony is lost on the Poop.

You also see Evangelical Christians as ravenous wolves?

Only some of them on this forum. For the most part, in real life mostly...I find Evangelical Christians to be awesome people. True Christians. Those that spend their days on here attacking Catholics, they are indeed ravenous wolves.

This is a political forum more than religious, and naturally the members of conservative church denominations are going to find fault with a liberal, European based, democrat voting church denomination that is state oriented, and those differences will also show up in the religion section.

Look at this thread about the leader of the Catholics.

As a Catholic, I cannot even begin to tell you how thoroughly disgusted I am with the Pope.

Some have asked, why don’t you leave the Church. I respond: The same reason why I don’t leave my country.

It is true we have a Marxist pope. But we also have a Marxist POTUS. I love my Church and my country, even though I am disgusted and appalled with the leadership of both.

Pope Frank’s dung comment? No, I am too disgusted with my Pope to read any more. So far, we are not marrying gays...so there ya go. Lots of the protestant sects do.

Moving out of America to a foreign country that is better, is a lot different than going to a new church, down the street from your old one.

This pope has made Pelosi sound sane and a good Catholic.....No, Nancy's Holy Ground is Abortion, which she stated herself....I really do not believe Pope Frank endorses abortion in any way. He is true to the life issues.

Yeah, but I actually like the Church I attend. I like my pastor, I have many friends there. I serve as volunteer. For many years. I am happy and content. Disgusted with the Vatican yes, but happy and content with my local church.

It’s the “fettering” that’s the “dung of the devil”.

That makes sense, I was just pointing out that moving out of America is a heck of a lot more difficult, than changing churches.

Capitalism loosed from the restraints of morality is evil. Not sure why people are having a problem with that.

Yup according to their Catechism they are ok with Islam. Sorry we dont worship the same God as muslims. Catholics you all may but I and most biblical doctrine based Christians dont. They always seem to dodge this when pointed out. This right here is enough for me to know that its not the denomination i would ever follow, not to mention all the pagan blasphemous BS mixed in from the roman empire.

“The Church’s relationship with Muslims. The plan of salvation also includes those who acknowledge the Creator, in the first place among whom are the Muslims; these profess to hold the faith of Abraham, and together with us they adore the one, merciful God, mankind’s judge on the last day (Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraph 841, quoting Lumen Gentium 16.)”

But that's not UNFETTERED capitalism - that's VERY FETTERED capitalism, or crony capitalism - which is the opposite of real free market economics.

Capitalism is like our systemm of government. It works best with honest, virtuous people.
