The Memphis City Council began the process Tuesday that could result in the removal of Confederate Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest’s statue and body from a public park.
The City Council unanimously approved a resolution calling for the removal of the graves of Forrest and his wife from Health Sciences Park at Union and Manassas, and an ordinance to remove a statue of Forrest from the park received the first of three readings.
The resolution about the graves still has to receive approval from Chancery Court and Forrest’s descendants, while the ordinance about the statue also requires approval from the Tennessee Historical Commission, which next meets in October.
“It’s very disturbing to want to dig up the graves of one of our military veterans and his wife,” said Lee Millar, of the local chapter of the Sons of Confederate Veterans.
Millar and a handful of other advocates for leaving the statue and graves attended the meeting to voice their support for Forrest, whom they said has incorrectly been identified as the founder of the Ku Klux Klan.
“I feel this is racist and it’s fascist,” said David Hoxie, 65, of Memphis. “When you obliterate the heritage of one section of the community, you obliterate the heritage of the whole community.”
Council member Edmund Ford Jr. said Elmwood Cemetery offered to move the bodies back to their original plot in the cemetery at no cost to the city. . .

It should be made known that when Forrest’s remains are disturbed that all Black honoree monuments in Memphis will be destroyed by the Celtic Order of the Ryan.
Ford’s family dynasty is the funeral business. Steady work in Memphis.
Memphis = Detroit of the South.
Removing this monument won’t make it any less of a slum.
Along these same lines the House has voted to ban the sale of the Confederate flag from National Park gift stores. I can see gift shops going broke in Gettysburg, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chattanooga, Manassas etc. Does the madness end?
I’ve only been through the airport to change planes, I never made it to Beale Street.
Not just grave desecrators.
Confederate soldiers are American soldiers.
It is desecrating the graves of American soldiers.
Beale Street used to be nice. I would be afraid to go down there now. Way too much violence in Memphis now.
So maybe history didn’t happen? So maybe we should erase slavery out of the history books too...just didn’t happen.

When I was growing up in the area in the 60s it was not a place to go for whites. Then they cleaned it up and made it a tourist attraction. So you’re saying now it’s back to the old days?
I think 63% of the population of Memphis is black. Why in the hell would any white person want to live there?

I cannot answer that. It’s been the late 90’s since I visited Beale Street.
I have friends that live near or visit Memphis regularly and they would tell you that it’s not a safe town. Many have had to move to Germantown, Cordova, or into northern Mississippi.
