State Silences Bakers Who Refused to Make Cake for Lesbian Couple, Fines Them $135K
The Daily Signal ^ | July 2, 2015 | Kelsey Harkness

Oregon Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian finalized a preliminary ruling today ordering Aaron and Melissa Klein, the bakers who refused to make a cake for a same-sex wedding, to pay $135,000 in emotional damages to the couple they denied service.

“This case is not about a wedding cake or a marriage,” Avakian wrote. “It is about a business’s refusal to serve someone because of their sexual orientation. Under Oregon law, that is illegal.”

In the ruling, Avakian placed an effective gag order on the Kleins, ordering them to “cease and desist” from speaking publicly about not wanting to bake cakes for same-sex weddings based on their Christian beliefs.

Are the politicians of the biggest city in your state a match to your values

Sorry if I hit a nerve.

In answer to your question, no, the politicians in the places I live are far short of perfect. But I'm not the one tossing out smug boostering posts either.

I admire Texas and Texans, always have. I don't like what I see, from afar admittedly, happening there in terms of numbers of illegals, the radical vindictiveness of the politicians on the left, and most of all the seeming threat of the fall of the conservative majority there.

We all love your Texas. We just hope you can keep it.

I wonder how they arrived at such a high number. A lot of cakes would have to be baked to come up with that much money. Plus, what sort of emotions were experienced by the gay couple to justify this payment? We seems screwed lately.

The Kleins should counter-sue the couple. Same symptoms plus a few more: loss of sleep, extreme anxiety, fear of eternal damnation, persecution on account of their love for Jesus, bankruptcy, etc..

I agree. I think we have to engage. We don’t have the leadership in Congress at present, but I think Ted Cruz would do a great job in leading on these issues as President. He is the strongest I have ever seen on Religious Liberty and traditional values. He has the legal knowledge to be effective in formulating a winning strategy legislatively and in the courts.

So, there is no first amendment at all when it comes to sodomites.

Don’t they have a lawyer? This whole thing appears unconstitutional particularly the gag order.

If I am crushed so be it but I am not going to compromise who I am.

Eventually, everyone can be pushed to the point where they have nothing left to lose.

No. That is what you are advocating.

Reality is reality. It is my right not to take part in things that are abhorrent to me.

I refuse to cower or weasel.

Indeed; if we don't fight back effectively and immediately, there will be no freedom left in the former USA. Frederick Douglass had something to say on this matter:

“Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did, and it never will. “Find out just what people will submit to, and you have found out the exact amount of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them; and these will continue until they are resisted with either words or blows, or with both. The limits of tyrants are prescribed by the endurance of those whom they oppress.”

And at that point they become highly dangerous.

You have a wonderful Independence day, too. Let us remember to bow and heads and give thanks as well as to resolve to be boots on the ground in God’s army. May he give us Wisdom and Strength and Godly leaders.

God Bless!

This guy is a politician, not a judge. When is this case going to reach a real court?

Even granted that there should be a law against discrimination based on sexual orientation and that it should even affect baking cakes for gay weddings, $135K seems like a pretty excessive punishment for one offense by a small business. Isn’t there some sort of constitutional argument against this kind of thing? But perhaps it would cost even more to fight it.

“When is this case going to reach a real court?”

Darn good question. So far it hasn’t been before anyone who understands what free exercise of religion is.

Probably sounded good. What I don't understand is how they decided one had been more injured than the other since one was awarded more money.
