Tunisia attack: Profile of gunman Seifeddine Rezgui

Tunisian student Seifeddine Rezgui opened fire on a tourist beach leaving at least 38 people dead. But the people who knew him told the BBC he was polite, never swore, never fought and liked breakdancing.

In the midday sun, Seifeddine Rezgui pulled a Kalashnikov from a parasol and opened fire on the beach, sending holidaymakers fleeing for their lives. He threw explosives at the pool area before continuing inside the Imperial Marhaba hotel.

Rezgui was not previously known to the security services. But Islamic State (IS), which said it was behind the attack, referred to him by a nom de guerre - Abu Yahya al-Qayrawani.

Unlike many Tunisian radicals, he is not believed to have gone to Syria or Iraq to join militants fighting there

A senior official at the Tunisian interior ministry told the Associated Press that Rezgui had been in Libya in January, the same time as two men who attacked a Tunisian museum in March. " "The Islamic State group (IS) has claimed the attack as its own.

"The attacker trained in Libya with weapons at the same period as the Bardo [museum] attackers," Rafik Chelli from the interior ministry told AP.

IS also said it was behind the Bardo museum attack in Tunis that left 22 people dead.

Mr Chelli said that Rezgui had travelled to the Libyan town of Sabratha at the same time as the Bardo attackers.

"He crossed the borders secretly," Mr Chielli told AP.

Any tourists who vacation in Muslim countries need their head examined. I was in the souk in Tangier Morocco a few years back and that was pretty scary, even then.

It’s sad because he was just turning his life around, going back to madrassa and attending mosque regularly. He had plans to attend flight school (aerial portion only) and become a pilot for a short time.

So sad....
