Scott Walker, Set for a Bigger Stage, Faces G.O.P Revolt in Wisconsin

As Gov. Scott Walker prepares to announce his campaign for president next month, promising to bring what he calls "big bold leadership" to Washington, as he did in Wisconsin, he faces a cloud over that story line: Republicans back home are in revolt.

Leaders or Mr. walker's party, which controls the Legislature, are balking at his demands for the state's budget. Critics say the governor's spending blueprint is aimed more at appealing to conservatives in early-voting states like Iowa than doing what is best for Wisconsin.

Lawmakers are stymied over how to pay for road and bridge repairs without raising taxes or fees, which Walker has ruled out. The governor's fellow Republicans rejected his proposal to borrow $1.3 billion for the roadwork, arguing that adding to the state's debt is irresponsible.

What it boils down to is basically this: The Republican legislature doesn't like borrow-and spend and they don't ax-and-spend, either. Secondly, many in the GOP there view this as an "unfunded mandate." Third, the under-current on this with the GOP there is that there are private investors who want to build a stadium and in with this will go tax-payer dollars. This doesn't seem to be true free-market capitalism, where the investors put up all of the risk, but they also get all of the reward. Sure, some might say that in some ways many other businesses not directly linked will also benefit economically. But if this stadium ends up being a net loss for the area, and if the big-time investors end up not bearing the brunt of the fallout, then perhaps that might be an example of corporatism, where the big-time investors reap the majority of the rewards if things go well, but if things don't go as planned then the average-Joe taxpayer might be the ones who bear the majority of the losses.

I know, I know, it seems as if those who support Ted Cruz or Ben Carson or others can’t say anything about Walker because if they do they are the bad guy, but Walker supporters get free rein here at FR to go after Cruz and others...

So if the federal government borrows money (which both Republicans and Dems in DC do) then that is better than tax-and-spend? How about doing neither of the two?

Secondly, there are corporatists on both sides of the aisle (both Dems and Republicans) with some who like taxpayer- funded subsidies for oil and gas but not for “green” stuff, and others who want subsidies for green stuff, but not for oil and gas.

Neither side of this truly supports free market/free enterprise in this regard.

Dubious. Wisconsin has excellent roads. On the whole, their roads are probably the best in the country. I doubt there has ever been a problem getting road maintenance funding in that state.

But the problem is, there have been times here at FR when people have posted stuff from The NY Times and they crow about how it hurts Hillary or some other Democrat.

About "70 million" people are receiving good incomes but are also steeped in debt and can't borrow more for big ticket items. Big, fat revenues into those salaries, little, stinky revenues out (not net taxpayers, net gobblers of debt/revenues).

My understanding is that the big disagreements holding up the Wisconsin budget are huge cuts to education that Walker wants and the legislature does not. Walker wants to borrow a huge sum of money for road and bridge repair and the legislature also disagrees with that.

Meanwhile, Wisconsin lost more jobs in May than any other state, over 8,000 jobs lost. Wisconsin has lagged behind since 2011 at about half the national average for job growth. Their unemployment rate is almost a point below the national average, but not enough to account for that low percentage of job production.

Ben Carson is against our Second Amendment! ...typical for participants in the government-linked medical rackets.

Scott Walker is the only candidate with a record to prove that he'll cut big government spending.

Mix in with that opposition from the GOP over what many of them view as this being an “unfunded mandate,” more borrow-and-spend, and the issue of taxpayer dollars paying for a big chunk of the proposed stadium.

The NYT was more balanced when Abe Rosenthal was editor. But, they fired him; and then he died. It's been a mess ever since. Always a shock if they publish an article, or express an opinion, that is not hard left.

Rosenthal was banished from the NYT in the late 90's, or before. First he became editor emeritus, and then became the editor for Jewish/Christian news. Although he was Jewish, himself, he had a magnanimous attitude toward Middle Eastern Christians. I always enjoyed his columns.

It was that Punch somebody who kicked him out.

The only one? Yeah, sure....

I don’t agree with Rand Paul on hardly anything, but he would certainly eclipse Walker in that area, and it would be very hard to say that Walker would cut big government spending more than Cruz would.

BTW, big gov’t isn’t being involved with the stadium issue in Wisconsin?

Is it only the investors who are going to be putting money up for the proposed stadium?
