Benefits to be extended to spouses of Texas' gay state workers

The state bureaucracy is moving forward to comply with the U.S. Supreme Court’s gay marriage decision, even as statewide elected leaders, including Gov. Greg Abbott, have lambasted the landmark ruling.

Starting Wednesday — less than a week after the decision — the Employees Retirement System of Texas, the University of Texas System and the Texas A&M University System will extend benefits to spouses of gay and lesbian employees.

That means the list of employers providing same-sex partner benefits will include the state’s largest: the state itself.

Meanwhile, at the local level, despite the saber-rattling of Abbott and other top Republicans, a growing number of county clerks were issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

The tangible developments highlight a divide between political rhetoric and practical reality on the emotional issue.

“Honestly, for the first time today I walked onto campus and I felt equal,” said Lisa Moore, an English professor at UT who had pushed for same-sex benefits. “I felt like I was being paid the same as a heterosexual employee.”

Anyone who thinks that Texas will be our salvation is delusional. Texas is about making money. Gays are good business.

And don't forget the demographic earthquake coming with the flood of illegals.

Texas will be California in the not too distant future. They got their San Francisco already in Austin.

Texas gave us the Bushes and their "compassionate conservatism" and now they're offering us Perry.

Yeah, they have Cruz too, but Cruz is Cruz and he has shown us his pro-big-business colors with his support of the TAA, TPA, Tisa, etc.

These governors are all hat and no cattle. If 20 of them got together and openly talked secession, it would scare the Cossacks in DC to death. They’d probably be able to wrangle a regional autonomy agreement out of it, and thus stay in the Union. But no one has the guts to try. Sad. We keep electing sheep instead of lions.

The CDC reports that the estimated lifetime treatment cost for HIV is $379,000 (in 2010 dollars). With treatment, HIV+ people can live 30 years or more. Without the expensive treatment, life expectancy post-infection is about 12 years (ten years until onset of AIDS, two years to die from it).

With gay marriage, an HIV+ man can get access to another man's health insurance. I suspect a major factor behind ObamaCare's "pre-existing condition" coverage, is so that HIV+ men could get the expensive treatment.

What this will do is force employers to push people off on the government healthcare exchanges all the more rapidly. This English professor will find out real soon. Universities all over the country are looking at doing it.

We've got beautiful beaches, majestic mountains, scenic deserts, and socialism.

When Texas goes blue you'll pretty much just have socialism.

Anyone who thinks that Texas will be our salvation is delusional.

The language might be too strong, but the conclusion is probably correct. Texas has its share of powerful Democrats and RINOs, and is a pretty safe win for the RINO in presidential primary elections.

I've been to a lot of your scenic deserts and I have been to some of your beautiful cities. All great I guess if you can overlook the rampant societal cancer that has metastasized throughout its confines.

You guys had better be thinking about where you're gonna get your water from instead of thinking about what's wrong with Texas.

even as statewide elected leaders, including Gov. Greg Abbott, have lambasted the landmark ruling.

Not sure how they can "lambast" it when they clearly support it. If they didn't support it, they would be issuing contrary directives. Instead, they are implementing the law. That, my FRiends, is consent.

Actually, I much prefer the Texas beaches to California.

California beaches are so sterile and restricted, you feel like you have to walk through a turnstile for a day visit.

"California beaches are so sterile and restricted"

Venice? Sterile?

If anything they need to get crop dusters to lay down some pesticides and disinfectants.

California beaches are bland, unappealing, they look good in photos, but we can't drive on them and camp and build fires, and drink beer and have our guns, and catch lunch with our seining nets.
