Maybe go back to the original question I am replying to?
He is asking what are the effects if churches had to operate as “Hobby Lobby-style business”. That’s why I am saying there wouldn’t be any volunteers, because businesses do not have volunteers, they have employees, who are regulated by various state and federal laws.
I have prepared more than 10,000 tax returns over 30+ years. I can safely say that those who tithe do so without concern about income tax. I can also say those who do not tithe don’t think about tax savings until they file return and then want to claim what they did not actually pay. The effect of your proposal is a tax increase on Christians which is something I find offensive. You want to extend it to all charity to be fair then okay.
I thought things were bad in Roe V. Wade, they went nonsensical back then. But then they hewed to law again.
Lately, they don't bother with such trivia as 'law' or 'definitions of words'. Why would they bother with tradition!
Well that is a cavil that does not understand the actual situation. That means WHERE APPLICABLE.
It’s the way they pay salaries, and the property tax schedules. Those are the two that will reduce their ability, and income tax deductions. Say for someone like me who donates over 5K a year, I can absorb that tax elimination. But some people can’t and just won’t give anymore. We’ll see what happens soon. The Democrats have wanted to put a gag on the Churches. (Which is weird because they campaign in Black Churches all the time)
Bible-believing Christians will still support their churches, tax exemption or no. In fact, the more willing the church is to vocally defend biblical morality, the more willing believers will be to support it.
I’m just answering the question, I’m not sure what you want from me. If you think it’s a silly question, tell that to the guy that asked it.
get the Church out of the State has now become Get the State in the Church
Go look up mutatis mutandis. If you want to misunderstand something go right ahead. You’ve already shown how you do that in other fora.
The issue will soon cut past “biblical morality.” It will reach that of sin and Savior.
As long as we are stopping at morality, we are really concerned with how nice life on earth is.
Go one step further: Get the Government out of the Marriage "Business."
A marriage license exists for the following reasons:
1. It's a tax. Dating back to the 1600's in England when the King decided to tax all marriages to increase his treasuries. The State Government's do the same. It's a tax.
2. It's the entry point of a civil contract between a man, a woman, and the State. That civil contract defines what happens should a marriage dissolve. It defines who gets what, child support (if applicable) spousal support (if applicable) and other terms of the divorce.
I say, get Government out of the Marriage business.
How? Heterosexual couples should SHUN getting a marriage license. Have a simple religious ceremony at a church of their choice and be pronounced man and wife.
Period. End of Story. Sit back, watch the individual states thrash without the income from marriage licenses.
Again, if you have some issue with the question, go take it up with the guy who asked it.
There are other taxes to consider. Real estate tax, business license, usually based on gross receipts, personal property tax and on and on and on.
Just quit holding wedding ceremonies of any kind in churches. Invite a preacher into your home for a wedding ceremony & keep it simple.
It’s a gift. You can give gifts to anybody you want.
I tithe knowing that salvation is by grace alone. But by tithing, I give the church the additional means to facilitate the spreading of the Word, the children a suitable place to worship, pastor and staff to deliver the Word, and missionaries the means to continue. Not sure how loss of non-profit status would really change that or the church.
You have a great point. If marriage is a basic human right as SCOTUS ruled, then you don't need no stinkin' license. There is nothing in the Bill of Rights that requires a license. The rights are God given and inalienable. What you suggest would be an extremely interesting test case. I hope someone pursues it.
Thank you, you get it. I'd be happy to be the test case, problem for me is I've been married for 29 years. :-)
If the USSC did in fact use the term "basic human right" then you're exactly correct that no license would be required.
Wonder who/when the first "test case" will pop up. You and I can't be the only people in the US who's figured this out .....
I took liberties when I wrote “basic human right”. I have not read the entire ruling..
“They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law,” Kennedy wrote of same-sex couples in the case. “The Constitution grants them that right.”
Before now, marriage has been deemed a privilege and like most privileges (driving, concealed carry, e.g.), licenses were required.
Now it’s a right and licenses are not required for rights.
Couples who get married in the church should send a copy of their wedding photo or church wedding bulletin to Fedzilla and say put us on record as being married. Period. End of story.
Depends on what state your in, example 2nd Amendment. Some states require license to carry, others are "Constitutional Carry."
Couples who get married in the church should send a copy of their wedding photo or church wedding bulletin to Fedzilla and say put us on record as being married. Period. End of story.
That would be the end goal, and that would effectively shut down "gay marriage." There is no BIBLE BELIEVING CHURCH that would perform a homosexual marriage.
Step 1: get the Government out of the marriage business. How? REFUSE TO GET A MARRIAGE LICENSE, CHURCH CEREMONY ONLY!
It's simple, and it should work.
