It is wrong for public officials to defy the Supreme Court. Yet thats what Republican presidential candidates have promised.
Marriage equality has won at the Supreme Court, but the fight over gay marriage is far from over. Now we enter the Republican temper tantrum phase.
Even before the Supreme Courts ruling, several prominent Republicans had pledged to disobey any high court ruling in favor of marriage equalityand had called on their fellow Republican leaders to do the same.
For instance, Republican presidential candidates Rick Santorum and Mike Huckabee have both signed a pledge that reads, We will not honor any decision by the Supreme Court which will force us to violate a clear biblical understanding of marriage as solely the union of one man and one woman.
Huckabee also challenged the authority of our nations highest court when he said, The Supreme Court cant overrule God.
Republican Senator Ted Cruz and Representative Steve King also called for Congress and any future Republican president to flagrantly ignore such a Supreme Court ruling.
Lets be clear: These are current and former officeholders, who have taken an oath to uphold the laws of our nation, literally pledging to violate those laws as interpreted by the Supreme Court....

I bet lots of Kohn’s previous works luved to quote Jefferson:
“Dissent is the highest form of patriotism.
The end result of feminism. No wonder so many American men look to other countries for wives.

I disagree with all legislation as an expression of morality. Instead of wasting time with multiple examples,I just have two. How can an immoral body make legislation that expresses morality? Is government seizure of private land moral?
Only moral people follow moral laws, even before the laws were written, in their hearts they knew it was wrong. Heck, even animal mothers protect their unborn and their young at all costs.
Tell me how abortion is a moral expression.
You are conflating meanings of the same word.
There is not one piece of legislation that does not express morality. Abortion (though not legislated - forced upon us by an imperial SCOTUS) is the expression of a moral code that says a “woman’s choice” is more important than a baby’s life. It is a brutish moral code, to be sure, but the law perfectly expresses their moral position.
Some have a warped moral sense that the taking of private property is moral, that taxing income is moral. Those laws reflect that rotten moral code.
Don’t conflate the term “moral” as in “moral code” meaning rules of conduct, with “moral” meaning good, upright, righteous.
Immoral men make immoral laws - and in so doing, the laws they make reflect their moral code.
