In 1991 my ship pulled into the UAE during ramadan. Food and booze was readily available. I’m sure it would be today if our leaders weren’t pussies.

This is not a new policy. I was deployed over there during Ramadan 10 years ago. Same rules, almost word for word, I believe. Inside US-controlled areas, these rules don’t apply.
And to a certain extent, it’s simply a practical precaution. Some of these jokers get real crotchety in the summer heat with nothing to eat or drink all day. They also carry AKs routinely, even outside of what we think of as a war zone. Do you want to be riding along on the highway eating a sandwich and drinking a soda, when the guy in the pickup truck next to you is in a bad mood and doesn’t really like infidels anyway? I think not.
