Sen. Roger Wicker of Mississippi: ‘I now believe our state flag should be put in a museum’

U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker, Mississippi Republican, said Wednesday he believes the state flag of Mississippi, which features the Confederate emblem, should be replaced.

“After reflection and prayer, I now believe our state flag should be put in a museum and replaced by one that is more unifying to all Mississippians,” Mr. Wicker said in a statement. “As the descendant of several brave Americans who fought for the Confederacy, I have not viewed Mississippi’s current state flag as offensive. However, it is clearer and clearer to me that many of my fellow citizens feel differently and that our state flag increasingly portrays a false impression of our state to others.”

The push to change or remove Confederate symbols has picked up in the wake of last weeks shooting deaths at a historic black church in Charleston, S.C. The suspected gunman has a history of association with white supremacist sites and an image of him with the Confederate flag has surfaced online.

South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley and other political leaders in South Carolina called earlier in the week to remove the Confederate flag from state Capitol grounds in Columbia.

I am a northern redneck who has spent about a decade in the south where I found people to be enormously friendly and helpful as compared to the urban north I grew up in. So I am not much invested in any flag except Old Glory but I am having a great deal of difficulty understanding how taking these flags down will change anything.

Sorry the Republican Party and France are already in court fighting over rights to use this flag. France has a longer track record of surrenders, but the Republicans are closing the gap quickly with one surrender after another to the democrats.

If we are going to ban the Confederate Flag because it was a symbol of slavery, then to be consistent, we should ban the Stars and Stripes too.

It flew over slavery and slave transporting ships for much, much longer than any flag of the Confederacy. If the logic is that the flag flew over slave-owning lands, then the Stars and Stripes has to go, as well.

Heck, even the Ku Klux Klan flew the Stars and Stripes in their rallies...

Senator Wicker is pandering to the democrats, he is obviously in league with Haley Barbour, Speaker Gunn and many other “leaders” of the Mississippi Republican Party who are possibly democrats at heart but just can’t get elected as democrats in Mississippi. I read that four people in a hundred are sociopaths, I believe that figure is much higher among politicians. Wicker and Cochran’s voting records are both near the bottom of all Conservative ratings our three Congressmen are somewhat better than them but not good.

Not just that but anything someone decides is politically incorrect in the future. He probably knows that some are calling for the tearing down of monuments and statues, re-naming military bases, what about US 11 the Robert E. Lee Memorial Highway? Their pandering is not going to gain them any support it’s going to cost them, all this going on at a time when all the Republicans have to do to win the WH, Senate and House is to unify those who traditionally support them and they start by attacking Conservatives and then adopting democrat policies and spending us into oblivion and refusing to stand up to obama and his illegal actions.
