Liberals are still getting the South all wrong
New York Post ^ | 6/23/15 | Jonah Goldberg

‘Lots of folks expected us to do something strange and break out in a riot. Well, they just don’t know us,” the Rev. Norvel Goff told the packed, multiracial congregation of Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, SC, on Sunday.

It was the first service since the horrific slaughter of nine innocent souls by a racist fanatic.

Not being a Christian, I can only marvel at the dignity and courage of the victims’ relatives who forgave the shooter. If I could ever manage such a thing, it would probably take me decades. It took them little more than a day.

Less shocking, but almost as uplifting, was the conduct of the broader Charleston community, which has been unified and dignified, despite the expectations of some in the media — and the accused gunman, who’d singled out Charleston because of its success at racial integration.

And this points to Goff being right, not just about Charleston but about the South in general.

There are few subjects that ignite more casual, uninformed bigotry and condescension from elites in this nation than Dixie.

Liberal Southerners are a blight as bad as LIBERAL Northerners who move there. When I lived in Jacksonville NC I went to a couple Baptist Churches full of Marines and their families from all over the nation. I loved it. I knew if I was ever in danger, all I would have to do is instead of yelling fire, just yell “Marines!” I miss them so much. I miss mine. He lives there now. Lord willing I’ll get back.

Oh yeah, don’t let northerners fool you. They can be the BIGGEST RACISTS ON THE PLANET. I know a guy from New Jersey who can’t let his mother come for a visit. His house is on the edge of a black section in town. She yells racist stuff at the black people walking through ON THE SIDEWALK in front of the house going to other areas of town.

I have worked with and been associated with enough northeners that have transplanted here to know what their true feelings are.

Perhaps you’d do better to visit a few places north of the Mason-Dixon line. I’m not sure which is worse: that woman from Pennsylvania who, having actually been in both places should have known better or the people who just go by preconceived notions and misplaced statistics.

I’ll take a bit of vulgarity over a nice fake smile hiding another row of jagged teeth.

You can accept it as a blessing and walk away, or an insult and make an azz out of yourself.
Oh please, it's purely passive aggressive. It's a backhanded phrase, somewhat similar to prefacing an insult by saying "I don't mean any disrespect but..." followed by disrespect.

You’re from the north aren’t you? Or perhaps a globalist?

I'm an American.

“bless your heart” Bwahahahaha ... you’re a better Southerner than I ‘cause I would have modified heart with little.

Nope, you are wrong. I have offered that phrase to people that I love and have sympathy for after they have suffered a tragedy. I have also said it as a snarky comment to someone who was behaving badly. The only difference is the look on my face.

Well bless your little pea picking heart, are you trying to make an insult about Southerner’s teeth? You’ve just been as busy as a one legged man at a butt kicking contest coming up with that little subtlety. That’s as witty as a box of rocks. You keep trying trying sweetie and maybe you’ll get there.

The vast majority of the planet does not have proper dental care. Comments like yours are why the vast majority of the planet hates Yankees.

It wasn't a comment about the lack of dental care. LOL.

Actually, no, but I enjoy how wildly you missed the point. Another row of teeth is more of a reference to sharks.
While it's not entirely analogous, the point is that the sweet, down-home smile and put-on manners mentioned in your first post are hiding something more dangerous behind them.

Something, I don't know, like this: "I was thinking ‘B!+<#, you need to take your yankee @$$ back up north where you came from."

And I got accused of vulgarity. Ha! Keep feeling like you are more civilized though.

Social virtues: like throwing your trash in the trash can, not spitting gum on the sidewalk, and keeping your noise level down in public places (other than stadiums and stuff).

How about saying yes sir no sir, yes ma’am no ma’am, holding the door for women and old folks. When I do those things the reaction alone is worth the effort. :)

“put-on manners mentioned in your first post are hiding something more dangerous behind them.”

Awwwww.....you poor little dear. Life must be soooooo frightening to you.

My comments that you say are vulgar were thoughts. Of course YOU are so sanctimonious that I KNOW you have had no ill thoughts about me during this banter.

“Keep feeling like you are more civilized though.”

Well, sweetie, I am more civilized than you because if the situation was reversed I would have never considered reprimanding you in the first place for a similar post. Just remember WHO started this little back and forth.

Life is frightening to me? Who got all touchy because some ditz from PA dared make a relatively innocuous comment about the number of churches per block. Run for the hills!!!

My comments that you say are vulgar were thoughts.

Thoughts they were, indeed. And we circle back around to the initial point: saying one thing and meaning another, especially when couched in a patois understood by all by the intended target, is disingenuousness disguised as refinement.

Just remember WHO started this little back and forth.

You did, by patting yourself on the back for nothing of consequence.

So you have problems communicating, since numerous people got that impression.
