As recently as eight months ago, at a gubernatorial debate, Haley answered her Democratic opponent’s call to take down the flag by countering that none of the CEOs who’ve brought their businesses to the state seemed to have any issue with it. That may be about to be change, though — protests to burn the flag on Saturday are already picking up steam on Facebook — so evidently Haley’s position will change with it. Last year 61 percent of South Carolinians supported keeping the flag in place on the state house grounds, but Haley’s term-limited as governor and is probably thinking more of her national potential at this point. She’s on the 2016 VP short list already; today’s announcement will remove a potential obstacle. It’s also a huge favor not just to Republicans in the state legislature, who’ll be grateful to have her acting as lightning rod on this, but to the GOP’s presidential field, which wants to make the Confederate flag issue go away ASAP. There’s a lot more upside than downside for her in taking this position.

If we start obliterating all offensive symbols and words from our landscape, we no longer have the first amendment or America for that matter. Like it or not, the Confederate flag represents HISTORY. It is a REMINDER. Destroying historical symbols is something ISIS does, and I see this ‘flag removal’ movement no different than what ISIS does.

I haven’t flown the American flag for over two years now, because the America that I flew the flag for, and pledged my allegiance to my entire life, no longer exists. We are one country, indivisible. We need ONE flag, not two or three as official flags. It is perfectly fine to hoist a confederate flag on private property. But only ONE flag, The Old Glory meaning stars and stripes for ever, should fly on Federal government buildings. State Buildings can fly state flag along with stars and stripes.

It’s not what the people of SC want, it’s RINOs like Graham and Haley and Tim Scott caving to political pressure. Never forget that Haley supported RINO Romney in 2012 over Newt. She’s all about money and nothing else. She also has no history whatsover in SC. Her ancestors were not slaughtered wholesale some 150 years ago. And supporters of the flag voted overwhelmingly for Graham and Scott.
I hope and pray that any republican that votes to remove the flag is voted out of office. What a bunch of sell-out traitors. SC used to be better than this. To think that Lindsey Graham sits in Strom Thurmond’s old seat is nauseating.

Actually, Louisiana, Alabama, and Mississippi have the highest murder rates. In fact, of the top ten, five are former members of the Confederacy.
What history does the Confederate flag represent, flying where it does?

Because, the history of the flag in this particular location is that it began flying there not as some innocuous reminder of history, but as part of the backlash against the civil rights movement in the 1960s.

My guess is she’s placating businesses who have to sell their goods and services nationally and internationally and not just in the south. Probably the tourism lobby wants the flag to come down as well.
Flying the Stars & Bars on the state building has become bad for business much like the freedom of religion bill did in Indiana.
Individuals will remain free to fly it wherever and whenever they want.

I don’t think anybody is talking about making the flag illegal just not flying it at state buildings.
You can still fly one on private property.
All the arguments against the Confederate flag existed 2 years ago or 6 years ago or 20 years ago. The only difference is nine murdered individuals. If the flag is wrong now then why didn't she think it was wrong in the past.
So yes, it's based on political calculus and nothing else.
