Morning Joe: Joke Could Be On Those Who Mock Trump
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

Posted on 06/18/2015 7:47:46 AM PDT by governsleastgovernsbest

"People who think he's a joke and a fool need to be careful because by the end of the campaign, the joke may be on them." That's how Joe Scarborough summed up the surprisingly respectful analysis of Donald Trump's candidacy on today's Morning Joe.

Introducing the segment, Scarborough suggested that if Trump sticks to a Perot-like populist message, he could get 15% of the primary vote. When Joe turned to Steve Schmidt, this NewsBuster expected the former McCain campaign manager and establishment Republican to dump on Trump. But to the contrary, Schmidt agreed heartily with Joe and went on to make the case that Trump is channeling widespread popular resentment, is the man people would want to hear in a debate, and could be "very impactful" in the race. John Heilemann was similarly respectful of Trump's potential, saying he "doesn't play by the rules and is fearless," and receives serious, generally favorable local coverage in places like Iowa and New Hampshire.

Trump’s responses to that letterman interview graphic in #15 makes me respect him more not less. Probably not the reaction you intended.

“The press is going to hold him to every quip, quote, and silly statement. The media cannot discern sarcasm and rhetoric from anyone but Hillary and Obama.”

The press doesn’t vote republican in primaries, probably.

He (or whoever) has to win the minds and hearts of voters - who have been ignored and deceived by the GOP candidates. They’ve been served up RINOs regularly and forced to thrown up and force it back down to cast a vote for lame candidates.

ANYONE who can convince voters they are not beholden to special interests, crony capitalism and dedicated to the safety and prosperity of our country, and most of all, NOT A WASHINTON insider, will do better than anyone can possibly think.

Trump has serious deficiencies. They all do. They are human.

He has massive name recognition and while I am not interested in any of the candidates currently, he will speak in a way no other candidate will speak, about things no other candidate will speak about, and would be most likely to beat the Hildabeast like a rented mule for every single minute of a debate.

I would pay to see that and America would tune in to watch it.

Hopefully, he’d fire her in his closing statement.

That's the crux of the matter.

Every one of the other candidates is for sale and already collecting advances.

Every one of them.

Otherwise they could not fund a winning campaign.

Trump's a jerk and all kinds of other bad things.

But he's not for sale. And that puts him in the top 3 from both parties.

What Trump is doing is not running for president.

He is opening up negotiations to get the presidency. The deal, as in the art of the deal, is the presidency. He is now starting to negotiate with the money class and ordinary Americans to get the presidency.

I watched a one hour segment Hannity did with Trump yesterday and if you listened carefully he was telling everyone he was opening negotiations. At one point when talking about the Iranians he said that if you are a really good negotiator whether you want to make the deal or not you start tapping on your opponent. He said that you:” tap, tap, tap.” You keep tapping to probe your opponent.

Trump is making all these provocative statements to provoke a reaction. That is the start of the tapping.

The thing about Trump is that he is feeling out the terrain to see who the players are he is up against and what they want. That is tapping.

Whereas all the other candidates are “running” for president, Trump is opening the negotiations to see if he can make a deal.

His approach is totally different from the others. They all want people’s support. Trump wants to see what incentives he can provide to seal the deal.

I won’t vote for Trump. He is a populist, not a conservative.
I voted for Reagan. And he wasn’t just some actor.

Reagan was an Army Officer between the world wars. During the Second World War he returned to the service to make mission simulation films for the army air corps, to aid in navigation.

Funny trump and bernie sanders have the same potential on opposite sides of the political spectrum. Each could elect to run independently which would split the respective political bases.

This next election could seriously be a four way race with:

Cruz (or another Republican of the thousands declared)

Trump as a conservative leaning independent

The hildabeast from the dim establishment and

bernie sanders as the leftist commie loon independent.

Each independent could siphon of votes from the "mainstream" candidates but don't have a snowball's chance on their own. The deciding question is which side has the most extreme nuts who would vote for the outliers?

The election could be decided by who has the most dysfunctional base. Sounds pretty much like a typical Italian election.

Mark Levin likes Trump, Rush said he couldn’t tear himself away from Trumps announcement speech. Erick Erickson had good things to say about Trump. He’s a formidable person.

Most conservatives don’t read FR or participate in the forum. Droves of them are calling place like Mark Levin’s show and other places in favor of Trump. I think he has just as good a chance as anybody else that’s running. And he could beat Hillary in the general election.

he and his minions would LOVE to have Trump as a 3rd party candidate . . ala Perot.

Shhhhhhhhhh! Don’t even say that. The very thought of that scares me sh**less. That would give the Oval Office to that evil incarnate, witch, Hillary Clinton.

I think he could ‘clean out our government’ of years of old rot and decay...

If he could only say to Boehner and McConnell: “YOU’RE FIRED!”

You say that like it’s a bad thing. Carly is about the only GOP Candidate who is unmercifully calling out, and attacking Hillary Clinton. Rubio is doing it somewhat. How about your candidate; whomever he is? Is he challenging that evil incarnate witch? If so, please tell us when and how.

The reason Ben Carson is running 3rd or 4th in every poll is because he is a Washington Outsider. He is quiet, soft spoken and non-self promoting. Ben Carson is no Donald Trump; granted, but it shows you that people are hungry for a non-politician.

At least it won’t be a backroom deal in a smoke filled room in the basement of the Capitol Building with McConnell, Boehner, Pelosi and Reid.

"No, we are stuck with the media darlings and our versions of MacArthur (Trump) for a while."

First of all MacArthur was fired for NOT being PC! And who trained Ike? MacArthur. Ike worked for MacArthur for the 10+ years leading up to WW2. Without MacArthur there is no Ike.

The list of things that Trump said he would do as President are verbatim what Cruz has said. The only difference is Cruz added Abolish the IRS and support Religious Freedom.

Make me wonder if the only reason Donald is running is a gynormous ego.

Exactly. My question is, what does Trump think is so wrong with Cruz that he feels he needs to run against him?
