Neil Young: Donald Trump 'not authorized' to rock in the free world
LA Times ^ | 06/16/2015 | Randy Lewis

Billionaire Donald Trump, a Republican, announced his bid for the presidency with Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World” blasting in the background, and once again a political candidate has associated himself with a rock star without the endorsement of said star.

“Donald Trump was not authorized to use ‘Rockin' in the Free World’ in his presidential candidacy announcement,” Young, 69, told the Los Angeles Times on Tuesday through his longtime manager, Elliot Roberts. “Neil Young, a Canadian citizen, is a supporter of Bernie Sanders for president of the United States of America,” referring to the U.S. senator from Vermont who is vying for the Democratic nomination in 2016.

I hope Neil Young will remember: a southern man don’t need him ‘round, anyhow.

The commie piece of you-know-what, Neil Young, had painted ALL southerns with a broad brush in his song Southern Man. So the southern rock band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, got him back in their song, Sweet Home Alabama: "I hope Neil Young will remember: a southern man don’t need him ‘round, anyhow".

That of course was for anyone who didn't already know this. :)

Trump should get a new song—not because of what Neil Young wants or doesn’t want, but because “Rockin’ in the Free World” is a lousy song.

[...except get his name in the news by complaining.]

Therein lies the answer. All the old and forgotten artistes use it for attention.

To quote Toby Keith (regarding Peter Jennings), “He’s a Canadian, ain’t he?”

I’m sure they already pay royalties wherever it is played, per the same ASCAP/BMI/SESAC licensing that applies to entertainment venues. This is just the composer being snotty because applicable copyright law did not encompass what he wanted.

Comrade Young is probably just upset that Trump will be using at least a portion of the song to promote genuine freedom and prosperity. Not the communist utopia he/Young had in mind.

Not only “Southern Man” but also the song “Alabama”.

Another canuck take on rednecks is DOA’s “If I Were A Redneck.” It is so over the top it is hilarious. (”I’d pray to God when I’m hungover”)

If trump paid a license fee to BMI or ASCAP, he can play it all he wants. Young doesn’t have the right to pick and choose licensees.

The RNC paid a fee for public performance of the entire catalog for the GOP convention. The Wilson sisters had no right to demand they stop playing Barracuda.

On the other had, that license doesn’t apply to TV and radio commercials. McCain used a John Fogarty song in a commercial without permission, and lost in court.

Well is Trump being reported as having done that (put a song in a political commercial without getting a license)?

Good post... you have a lot of the detail of what happened. I truly despise Neil Young. A friend of mine went to a Young concert in Charlotte a couple of years ago and he is very patriotic. He was too young to ever know what a commie jerk this guy was.
