Combat Ship Christened for Former Congresswoman, Gun-Control Advocate Giffords

The Defense Department is naming a combat ship after former congresswoman and gun-control advocate Gabrille Giffords this weekend.

Giffords was shot in the head at a constituent meet and greet during her third term. She resigned from Congress in 2012 to focus on her recovery, and started a gun-control PAC called Americans for Responsible Solutions in 2013. She and her husband, astronaut Mark Kelly, have also advocated for gun-control measures in congressional testimony.

The Navy’s tenth littoral combat ship will be christened USS Gabrielle Giffords on Saturday in Mobile, Ala.

“The christening of the future USS Gabrielle Giffords marks the beginning of what is certain to be a long life for this great ship,” said Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus in a statement. “It is also a celebration of the skill and dedication of the men and women who have built LCS 10 and the courage of her namesake. This ship truly embodies the Navy motto of Semper Fortis – Always Courageous.”

Giffords has not served in the military. Her husband is a retired Navy captain.

Jill Biden will be the one smashing a bottle of champagne across the bow during the ceremony.

Designed to operate in shallow coastal waters at speeds that can exceed 40 knots, the LCS is armed with 57mm and .50 caliber guns as well as Hellfire missiles.

Other LCS are named Freedom, Fort Worth, Independence, and Coronado. LCS under construction or in the pre-production stages have all been named after U.S. cities.

Well hell, let me ask the question.

This is satire, right?

They should not name ships after living people, for one thing.

They should not name military vessels after anti-gun fools, for another.

Nothing should be named after living politicians.

Only after death and after a thorough audit of their finances.

It’s OK. None of the guns have flash suppressors or magazines that hold more than seven rounds. And none of them are painted black.

This ship has been disarmed for its safety and the crews’ safety.

Does Harvey Milk or Mathew Shepard have a ship yet? How about Trayvon or the Gentle Giant?

It’s not a real combat ship.

In the upcoming war in the South China Sea, it will probably be appropriate that our vessels are named after victims. And manned by trans-whatevers.

Not a day goes by without O insulting or attacking or weakening or undermining USA, the Church, Christians, Jews, or all of the above.

LCS = Little Crappy Ship. Pretty appropriate, really.

There is a sub named Carter. Only boat that has no nickname and is only referred to by its sail number.

The ship won’t get any attention until someone shoots at it.

It also is one of the most secretive of a secretive fleet. As part of my job I occasionally interact with people at Navsea and that boat’s special missions get alluded in some folks comments, but never with any details. Just enough to know that it’s duty cycle is not like any of the other boats in the sub fleet.
