With no debate and bipartisan support, the state Senate voted 26-8 on Tuesday to raise the legal age to buy tobacco in California from 18 to 21.
--SNIP--
Even as tobacco companies are increasing their influence again at the Capitol, shedding a once-toxic reputation, SB 151 received unanimous support from Democrats, as well as yes votes from four Republican senators: Tom Berryhill of Twain Harte, Ted Gaines of Roseville, Janet Nguyen of Garden Grove and Jeff Stone of Temecula.
If SB 151 is approved by the Assembly and Gov. Jerry Brown, California would be one of the first states in the country to raise its legal tobacco purchase age to 21. A bill in Hawaii is currently awaiting the governors signature.
The Senate also considered on Tuesday two bills to place additional restrictions on e-cigarettes.

Will that affect military based in CA?
I wrote, “SB 24 and SB 151”; that should be “SB 24 and SB 140.”
Well, yeah. They need the tax revenue.
On post, the federal government should be able to set it’s own rules.
(Yeah, yeah, make it only for state/local elections, then...)
Was chatting with my dad and uncle this evening. My uncle said when he was in during Nam that the base would not serve under 21 because that was the state law.
These are the same people who think 10 years have a right to sex.
Right before I joined the Army, they could serve alcohol to under 18, even though state law was 21. But then they changed it to match the state law.
And that kindergartners need to learn how to become queer.
.
Voting age should be 31.
I was free to drink at Ft Ord in 1969 as a teen.
It’s funny, but during this 40 year war against tobacco, the libertarians never seemed interested.
I guess smoking stuff, just isn’t on the radar of the libertarians.
We figure if you can give your life for your country at 18 you can damn well drink for your country at 18 ...
Super - but I’m seeing now that the base drinking age reflects what state law is ... sad.
It probably does now.
HAHAHA. Now they will have to raise the taxes to make up for the funding they will lose.
Drug test the politicians and I will bet most will fail.
Why stop at 21. Why not make the new “age” 60 - certainly, even a resident of Kalifornia, is mature by THAT age, or at least as mature as they will ever become.
Works foe me!
