Yep...I empty all my tanks (run them out) before the winter.

What I have found is great is SeaFoam additive....that stuff works great. I bought a whole case of it..

There are other problems with it but...Ethanol DOES NOT destroy engines.

You're right. It doesn't "destroy" engines.

It just gums up carburetors (in those engines that have them - particularly small engines) to the point of requiring regular and costly clean-outs/rebuilds.

Not too long ago I picked up a small, shallow-draft fishing skiff to get my kids out on the water. I looked extensively at various outboard motors up to 5hp and one of the things I kept running into over and over and over again were people who were having to have their carbs stripped down every 2-3 years (and a few were saying every year). Even WITH making sure that the stabilization additives were put in with the gasoline and running the motors dry after each use.

Ended up going with a motor by a company called Lehr. Which is propane-powered, not gasoline. Lehr is really playing up the "green" angle, which is irrelevant to me (except for the irony of it being a "green" solution to a problem caused by "green" policies.) What mattered to me was the level of reliability claimed by reviewers and people I know who have them.

So far, and now into my second Summer having it, it's working great. Especially considering the half-dozen or so people I've seen really struggling to get their Mercs/Tohatsus/Yamahas/JohnnyRudes started this Spring.

There is a way to remove MTBE from the environment, but nobody has tried it, AFAIK.

There is a way to deconstruct virtually EVERY organic compound, that is by running the contaminated substance through a plasma trash conversion system. A high-temperature plasma arc in a dry nitrogen atmosphere is initiated, and trash ground up into small pieces, from whatever source, is dumped in a steady stream into this plasma arc, which has an operating temperature of 35,000 degrees F. (about three times the surface temperature of the sun). Out comes a molten slag, the various metallic and non-metallic elements which cool into an obsidian-like glass (it is mostly silica), which is also a pretty good ore for the recovery of the various metallic elements. The other product is something called syngas, elemental hydrogen and carbon monoxide, both excellent fuels with rather complete combustion when combined with oxygen, much more cleanly than a petroleum-based fuel source. Carbon monoxide, when burned, becomes carbon dioxide, a plant food, and hydrogen may be burned directly, forming a unique “ash” called water vapor, or it could be sent through a fuel cell, and the resulting product is - water vapor. Plus electricity.

Once this plasma-arc trash conversion system is set up and running, so long as the feedstock keeps coming through the plasma arc, it will continue to produce the syngas and the slag. The syngas produced is what powers the electrical generation machinery, and the system can produce much more power than it consumes. About a third of the electricity is used to maintain the plasma arc, and the rest can be sent out onto the electrical grid. So, we get power from trash, and it eats up every hazardous material out there, from medical waste to used condoms. It could even be used for radioactive materials, but the isotopes would have to be segregated from the rest of the slag production, which may require a very specialized and dedicated plasma-arc unit.

There is a place to send the radioactive wastes to, as well. But that is a whole different technology, which, incidentally, also generates relatively low-cost electrical energy.

All this involves the environment. But the end result CLEANS UP the environment, fairly quickly, and makes things better than they were, all the time, providing ample electricity and a variety of recovered elemental substances. All with no need to impose onerous taxation, and with the potential for a very healthy profit margin.

Have you tried the Marine formula Sta-bil?

Actually I now hear the gasahol is fairly stable in unvented tanks, where humidity can’t get into the mixture. But that’s why lawnmowers have that problem...vented caps.

Speaking of lawnmowers, the Sun is finally shining, and my grass is obstructing the view.

I think petroleum impurities in most any gas formula can set up and become the varnish that clogs carb jets and the like. Emptying a tank and running out the engine stops that. Sea Foam is a sort of marine based Sta-bil but I think does a better job.

BTW, if you didn’t have vented caps, then your carbs would starve for gas eventually.

I spent a few years of childhood, in a farm town in northeastern Colorado.

At the time the main crop was sugar beets. But now the main crop is federally stimulated, subsidized corn for ethanol.

The fields and the town appear much more prosperous, now.

These simple members of “middle America” are now on the teat, and my guess is plenty of Republican politicians will help them. Ken Buck, staunch conservative, is their Rep.

I've had a few conversations with some pros. One, the Maine Snowmobile Association rep. He said the alcohol is a great solvent and cleaner, in an older machine, run only on traditional gasoline, the tank is lined with varnish. The ethanol proceeds to remove the gunk and deposit it in your filter...or carb. And it also eats rubber parts that are not formulated for it.

He also said the snowmobiles that did blow up, would have anyway, because the operators are out on frozen lakes wide open for long periods, over 100 MPH....things can break.

I suppose you could get, or make some sealed caps and instead of running the tank dry, just replace the vented cap on a partial tank of fuel. (when you put the machine to bed)

After I run out gas from my machines for the winter, I leave the cap off. Seems to work okay for me. I’ve had much less rebuild time since doing that. But your discussions with the rep are something to consider. I’ll have to think about old varnish and potential new varnish and all that. Thanks,

100% Gasoline

Pure-Gas.Org

Then check the locations in your state. There are many others that are not listed.

And destroy even more small engines...

You may find a location that sells 100% gasoline in your area.

http://pure-gas.org/index.jsp?stateprov=PA

If you are filling your small gas containers (2 to 5 gal) pump about 3 gallons into the gas tank on your car before fill those small cans.

This will purge the hose and piping inside the dispenser of the product purchased by the guy before you. Then fill those small can with 100% gasoline.

“...A 2012 study by Auto Alliance showed that some cars (model years 2001 to 2009) showed internal engine damage as the result of using an ethanol fuel blend. Damage to the valves and valve seats was evident in some of the cars tested. One of the 16 cars in the Auto Alliance study failed emissions compliance standards, which means it emitted more pollution than allowed by the EPA. The study also showed that cars running on E15 take a hit on gas mileage — so they require more fuel to travel the same distance, which counteracts the benefits of diluting it in the first place.”

I beg to differ. My 1999 Grand Marquis is running OK and I expect to have it for many more years. But if this E15 or E20 garbage is foisted upon us ... who do I sue when my engine dies because of this stuff? A perfectly good car damaged by government mandates for payoffs to farmers.

Thank you for the tip. If the gas stations are within a reasonable drive, I will look to buy my gas from them.
