Latest US proposal for ethanol could have political fallout

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration's latest plan on ethanol, the corn-based renewable fuel, probably will not have a major effect on pump prices, but could have political reverberations in Iowa and other farm states in the 2016 presidential campaign. Under the proposed rule announced Friday, the amount of ethanol in the gasoline supply would increase in coming years, just not as much as set out under federal law. That approach drew criticism from ethanol and farm groups that have pushed to keep high volumes of ethanol in gasoline. Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton has called for a robust renewable fuels standard while campaigning in Iowa, host of the leadoff presidential caucuses next year. Iowa produces more ethanol than any other state, and the renewable fuel has long been a powerful economic and political issue.

The change just acknowledges the reality of static ethanol production due to low prices, and, in the case of cellulosic ethanol, the lack of any production breakthroughs.

In other words, an admission that fairy dust can’t be mandated.

Grief, no. I am tired of buying a gallon of gas, then getting 90% gas and 10% filler. Ethanol takes food out of the mouths of the hungry worldwide just so some US nutjob, eco-wacko can feel good about saving the environment or some such nonsense. Get this dreck out of my gas tank and into the bellies of the hungry. Win-win for everyone.

and then there is surplus natural gas....

” The boom in natural gas production has some interesting ethanol industry angles, besides record low prices for the major energy source for ethanol producers.”

Ethanol from gas will led the starving masses have their corn. It is also less dangerous to export corn than natural gas

The more ethanol you add to avgas the more you have to be concerned about water and it’s corrosive effects. That is why ethanol is not popular as an aviation fuel additive.

“And destroy even more small engines.”

And big engines ... my 1999 Grand Marquis can't take any more of that garbage and my wife's new Rav4 says that 10% is the max.

If more of this garbage is put into the gas it will ruin virtually all engines made before this year.

BAN ETHONAL FROM ALL GASOLINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Corn acres will be reduced and devoted to other crops. Corn is selling for around the cost of production, and there’s a lot of it in surplus. Largest world “carryover” of corn in 15 years.

If ethanol were a viable fuel it would need no subsidy.

What does ethanol do for us?
1. Reduces the efficiency of your engine resulting in lower gas mileage.
2. Destroys the seals in small engines.
3. Is an environmental disaster.
4. Drives up the cost of food production.
5. Cost the American Tax Payer billions each year.
6. Is the cause of major nitrate pollution in the Mississippi River Basin.
7. Makes Archer Danials Midland rich whom then gives millions of dollars to Congress to keep this insane program going.

And destroy even more small engines....And big engines

There are other problems with it but...Ethanol DOES NOT destroy engines.

I had not heard that ethanol was used anywhere but in “automotive” gasoline mixtures.

There is a practical limit on how much ethanol may be mixed in with gasoline, before there becomes a problem with the separation of alcohol from gasoline during longer-term storage. Also, ethanol absorbs moisture from the atmosphere, further contaminating the fuel.

And corn or other grains are NOT the least-expensive way to produce ethanol. Using a fraction of natural gas, ethylene, and combining it in the presence of a catalyst, with water vapor, provides a good, reliable source of ethanol, of better controlled quality, than from distillation of alcohol from corn mash. However, this does not buy very many votes.

More ethanol so I get to buy more expensive additives to prevent fuel system damage or worse yet buy new carburetors.

The left is so counter productive to their own ways. A small engine starves for fuel because the passages are corroded, so the choke is partially closed to get it to run, and the engine run rich - which equals pollution which is what the left claims they want to reduce.

They sell gas cans with no second opening for a vent, with some stupid tube in the spout that is supposed to work, but often restricts or stops the flow. So people remove the spout, and spill gas, which creates more pollution.

That is the problem, the “push” is on from enviro nutz through the EPA to finally get aviation into the green age, and require no lead in av gas and additives such as ethanol to green up the industry. So far nothing has been certified to replace 100LL for aviation fuel, but “friends of the Earth” are watching and impatiently waiting. It’s for the children.
