Sen. Cruz: Trade Promotion Authority Creates a Path for Prosperity

We must engage the global economy to ignite growth and opportunity at home

May 22, 2015 | 202-228-7561

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), today released the following statement regarding legislation to establish trade promotion authority:

"The American middle class is getting crushed by the Obama economy," said Sen. Cruz. "Middle class incomes are stagnating, and the labor force participation rate has not been this low since the Carter Administration. While I have serious concerns about the all-too-typical Washington backroom deals that enabled this bill to get to the floor, I could not in good conscience vote against a bill whose most significant impacts will be jobs, growth, and opportunity for struggling American families.

"By passing Trade Promotion Authority, we create a path for trade agreements to reduce government-created barriers to prosperity. More economic growth will expand opportunity to those working to climb the economic ladder and achieve the American Dream.

"This bill increases the transparency of trade deals considered under its rules. It requires the public posting of the full text of any such agreement for at least 60 days before Congress begins consideration and reaffirms that Congress gets the final say. It would enable both this President and the next to expand trade that benefits American workers.

"This legislation ensures the United States will not be stuck on the sidelines as China aggressively pushes the 19 trade agreements it currently has under construction. It sends a message to the world that the United States will play an active role in writing the rules that will govern international trade this century. The cost to peace and prosperity of doing otherwise is too great to let this opportunity pass."

"The American middle class is getting crushed by the Obama economy," said Sen. Cruz. "Middle class incomes are stagnating, and the labor force participation rate has not been this low since the Carter Administration.

So then Cruz sides with the lowlife who is crushing the middle class...

I think Cruz is going to lose a lot of grass roots support over this one...

Cruz also supports bringing in more low wage, high tech foreign workers to replace American workers...

Cruz supports strengthening the (anti)Patriot Act in opposition to the privacy of American Citizens...

While it's clear now that Cruz is another 'globalist', it's interesting that he claims to be a Constitutionalist which to me is diametrically opposed to globalism...The globalist unfair free traders are working to undermine our Constitution...How can you be pro Constitution and pro globalism at the same time???

Got another Dr. Suess story Ted?

***************

Sure- “If I Ran the Zoo.”

Sen. Cruz could dedicate it to many of this thread. The main character posits that if only He ran the zoo, how much better the zoo would be.

We could travel from the zoo, to the farm and discuss how all animals are equal, except for some...

It's not Suess, but still accurate.

All we have been reading for the last several months is Ted Cruz is the most brilliant candidate since Reagan. He knows the Constitution forward and backward. Now he does something puzzling and suddenly everyone here is smarter than Ted Cruz. Chill people. He didn’t suddenly get stupid.

If it’s so great why did he propose an amendment to it that limited immigration ? An amendment that failed.

Yeah, his immigration amendment failed. But he still loves the bill. Sorry, another globalist ivy league stooge who talks a good game.

“You really are a gibbering moron.”

And you dress funny. And your point is precisely what?

Or would you prefer to continue to engage in ad hominem attacks rather than address the issues at hand?

This is not the bill(s)you are worried about. It is strange when both conservative Republicans AND the whole Washington Post board agrees:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/senates-trade-vote-was-a-victory-for-truth/2015/05/23/d32abcea-fff1-11e4-8b6c-0dcce21e223d_story.html

This is simply a “thumbs up, thumbs down” thing. What 0 has been working on, which hasn’t become known, is the real thing to be concerned about. However, this will make voting on that trade agreement and any other a much simpler “pass/fail” when people aren’t allowed to amend/modify them.

Cruz Battles TPA’s Sneaky Immigration Changes | http://ConservativeHQ.com http://www.conservativehq.com/article/20281-cruz-battles-tpas-sneaky-immigration-changes#.VVaJo6Q45pE.twitter

14May2015,”Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) has filed an amendment to the Trade Act of 2015 to lock in assurances that this legislation cannot be used to change federal immigration law.

“The Obama Administration has repeatedly assured Members of Congress that there is nothing in the Trade Act of 2015 that would allow the President to unilaterally make changes to federal immigration laws,” said Sen. Cruz. “I agree, and we should put it in writing and make it binding law. I am a strong supporter of free trade, but I cannot support legislation that would allow the President to once again circumvent Congress to enact his own immigration laws. Since the Obama Administration has emphatically argued that TPA will not affect immigration, it should support this amendment, which makes that promise explicit.”

The amendment states that nothing in the Trade Act of 2015 or in any trade agreement subject to the Act “shall alter or affect any law, regulation, or policy relating to immigration.”

The amendment also states that any fast-track procedures shall not apply to any implementing bill submitted with respect to a trade agreement “that includes any provision that alters or affects any law, regulation, or policy relating to immigration.”

The text of the bill is below (please note that H.R. 1314 as introduced relates matters other than trade) or click this link for a PDF: http://www.cruz.senate.gov/files/documents/Bills/20150513CruzTPAno%20immigrationlawchangesamend.pdf

Yes, Catherine, some Freepers were just waiting for something they could nail on Cruz so he wouldn’t win as the candidate to oppose Hillary. In this bill, every trade deal has to be approved by congress so this bill doesn’t give Obama a free ride.

Some Freepers don’t care, they are sure they are smarter than Cruz and sure he will sell them down the river. They really make me sick as they gripe, complain, stomp their feet and have a fit, and are positive they are the only ones who know how to fix this country - and they don’t know jack.

His yea vote implies agreement with the secrecy...and he is still your candidate? I want nothing more than to reverse the current slide we’re on, but I cannot (will not) choose someone who supports secret legislation or trade authorities. It is the antithesis to the type of government we should have. Ted messed up on this one and hopefully will wake up and smell the coffee. IMO, this is strike two.

Ted Cruz, imho, is the best candidate I’ve seen in a helluva long time and I’m not about to throw my support of him over something that I am not clear on myself.

There is a lot of confusion over this deal and I will await the details and sort out what and when I am able.

The primary season is still young and with 2016 being unlike any other election in my lifetime I will not succumb to panic.

At this juncture I still trust Ted Cruz.

There are differences between moral and immoral. Actually they are totally opposite. Immoral is as immoral does. We have to look into the future to reverse what happened in the past 6 1/2 years and will happen in 20 months.

In my view, there is no room for faith in politics. Our constitutional structure is based on the fact that men are not angels.

Faith/morality has everything to do with politics. If electorates are immoral, nothing in the Constitution will save us from immoral politicians. The constitution assumes that we, the people, are somewhat moral to follow it.

I didn’t mention morality. You are making a strawman argument. But let me ask you:Do you have ‘faith’ in Ted Cruz?

For as smart as Ted is supposed to be, this was a bad move. Either a not-ready-for-prime-time move, or he’s getting bad advice. All of us who are desparatellt seeking a true conservative should not compromise our principles. Imagine if Senator Hillary Clinton voted the way Sen. Cruz did. What would this forum be saying? Just because it is Ted Cruz doesn’t make it right. And for those who are bending themselves into pretzels to justify a “wait and see” attitude, you have to be intellectually honest with yourself. I don’t want to believe it either, but a voting record is the representation of candidates for higher office. We can’t say wow, he’s such a great conservative and then ignore a vote on something that is being kept as Secret!

Apparently, neither does Ted. So, we’re supposed to believe this is some calculated vote to cozy up to the big money donors because the Senate will have the final say on treaties and that’s when he’ll redeem himself? Based on the performance thus far of this “Republican wave victory” Senate, not a chance I’m comfortable with for a supposed conservative candidate for president.
