Fast-track Trans-Pacific Trade legislation passes U.S. Senate hurdle in win for Obama

President Barack Obama's signature Asian trade push cleared another hurdle in the U.S. Senate on Thursday after a knife-edge vote moved the White House closer to gaining the power to speed trade deals through Congress.

Senators voted 62-38 to give Obama a major victory and set up a speedy decision on the "fast-track" trade negotiating authority the president needs to complete the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade deal. TPP is seen as central to U.S. efforts to counter China's increasing economic muscle.

Thirteen of 44 Democrats supported the legislation through the second Senate vote. Some supported moving ahead with fast track after Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Republican, assured them he would set a vote next month on a bill to renew the Export-Import Bank's charter, according to leading Democratic senators. The charter is due to expire at the end of June.

They were joined by 49 of 54 Republicans, giving supporters of the legislation more than the 60 votes needed to proceed in the 100-member Senate.

Senators will now weigh amendments to the bill. If there is cooperation among all senators, the bill could come to a vote later Thursday, with only a simple majority of 51 needed for passage.

Under fast-track, Congress can approve or reject trade deals like the TPP, with 11 other countries ranging from Japan to Chile, but not amend their contents.

But the path is not clear yet. The Senate will now start considering amendments to the bill, including controversial sanctions for trading partners that manipulate their currencies, a move opposed by the partners.

Trade deals will now give Corporations the markets..... and Obama’s ‘bringing into the US illegals’, immigrants, refugees from around the world will meet cheap labor demands.

Then Obama can claim he brought Corporations back to the us....when in fact it’s simply the Global Agenda to re-distribute cheap labor to the nations who can build companies in a safe environment....rather than hostile ones. Their answer is then to move the people to the countries.

There is no concern for how the different cultures adapt to one another.....the plan is all cultures must allow and adapt along side each. And there will be continued laws to protect them.

Thanks republican leadership. Finally Obama gets everything he wants after 8 years of Harry Reid mucking up the Works. A bill so great no one is allowed to see it. Hey McConnel. Get a paper towel and wipe your face off. You look like a glazed donut.

"Finally Obama gets everything he wants"

This isn't just about Obama.

The Chamber of Commerce wing of the Republican party (which is most of them) wanted this deal.

You can also thank chief architect Paul Ryan for this deal:

Secret agreement.

Secret.

Only Sen. Warren understood that and spoke out loudly.

Senator Boxer spoke out pretty loudly as well. Sad, isn't it?

Congressman Paul Ryan says that every president since FDR has had fast track authority on trade, so what’s the big deal?
Politifact rated Congressman Ryan’s statement as “Half-True.”

“Half-True.”

Does that include legislation done in complete secrecy?

One thing that I will agree on - used car salesman Ryan is definitely a master of "Half-Truths".

I find no pleasure at all in stating that....but the fact is what is being done in our Government regarding laws, deals, what they pass and don’t pass is all about how it plays into the Global Agenda for World domination of trade, banks, industry and everything ‘which has revenue flow’...including churches and organizations and educational systems, healthcare etc......

Politcally Representatives are all about the seat they might covet within that Agenda and a seat at the Ultimate table.....which will depend greatly on the revenues and sources of one might bring to that table and control of.

The Clinton Foundation and all the companies which support it come to mind....it’s been nothing but a huge slush fund to gain power and influence on an International scale.

You are not wrong.

Some Tea Party members will vote for Warren as she was the only one willing to fight this.

On this issue he has 49 Republican accomplices. Only 5 Republicans joined with 31 Democrats and 2 left leaning independents to oppose giving Obama free reign on trade negotiations.
