At a time when 8.5 million Americans still don't have jobs, some 40 percent have given up even looking.
The revelation, contained in a new survey Wednesday showing how much work needs to be done yet in the U.S. labor market, comes as the labor force participation rate remains mired near 37-year lows.
A tight jobs market, the skills gap between what employers want and what prospective employees have to offer, and a benefits program that, while curtailed from its recession level, still remains obliging have combined to keep workers on the sidelines, according to a Harris poll of 1,553 working-age Americans conducted for Express Employment Professionals.

Their situation has nothing to do with the fact that there are no real jobs available perhaps. They should all be sent to work houses, because they are most assuredly damned, in any event, according to Calvin, otherwise they would have jobs, right?
I’m not surprised one bit. Those over 45 years old or so, once they lost their careers, jobs etc, are pretty much in decline and have been for years.
my husband has given up looking....he’ll get his first SS check in about 2 weeks....

Those 40% are therefore not counted in the unemployment numbers.
Even if you use the 5.4% unemployment number that has recently been touted by the liars in office, add to that this 40% which isn’t looking any more and you get 9%.
It’s a game of averages and liars.
If you go up to Philly or Baltimore....looking at innercity unemployment, it’s closer to 30-percent. But then you have to take into consideration that some of the guys are unemployed but pulling in a thousand a week off illicit drug sales.
I had a part time job from 2011 until this Feb. That was the ONLY job offer since being laid off in Mar 2009 from fulltime. 53 YO and have held FT jobs for 30 years. I am not giving up, not stopped looking for work, but full and part time jobs have stopped looking for me. It is degrading and depressing. Please don’t judge me.
I’m right there with you on that. Still looking for permanent work myself. Just had an interview today with a large, international company based in St. Paul, MN. Was advised at the end of the interview that if I am successful in getting hired, I need to be prepared to endure at least 3-4 more interviews over the course of 5-6 more weeks. Talk about stiff competition and a cumbersome hiring process! It’s a frustrating and demoralizing process at times, but this is the world we live in today.

I’m not going to judge you. But at your age, have you considered starting your own business? That’s what I did when I retired from HP after 34 years at 55... It was different, it was fun and I made a lot of money. Did that for 5 years and retired for good.
Pretty damn asinine of you. I was relieved of joblock three years ago and haven’t been paid by anyone for a hell of a long time. I finally gave up/into the pain and had major back surgery end of last year, and under go a quadruple cervical discectomy and fusion Friday. Would I still be working with the pain if someone would have hired me? F yeah! But after three years of hey your in our top three, you’re our number one candidate, followed by sorry you missed it by that much. I said screw it and opted for the surgery and hopefully some relief, and I guarantee you there are a hell of a lot of people like me who would much rather be working, no matter what, but you go right ahead and keep making your insulting all inclusive bolshevik.
Not everyone has the skill set, knowledge or ability to start their own business. You also need some sort of seed capital. A 35 year career with a retirement is a nice back stop for an attempt to go it alone.
As for most people born after 1965 a career of five year intervals at a succession of companies with varying degrees of success with companies that offer few if any benefits is far more likely than a 35 year single company career and a retirement plan in private industry. Something we can thank the one way ‘open’ markets of Most favored Nation Status for China and one way free trade deals that have decimated American industry.

I don’t agree... Walk down main street and into the first 50 businesses and you will find probably probably none that are run by somebody with an MBA, or in my case an engineering degree. Just ordinary folks... 12 will be run by a fifty year old woman who speaks broken English.
Younger people are having trouble finding jobs, too. My college-age son has been applying for work at various places every summer since he was 16, and he's never even been granted an interview. He's a top student, but jobs are hard to find nowadays. We know of many other young people having the same trouble.
I'm only a few years younger than you are, and I need to find work now after spending 15 years raising children - out of the workforce. I plan to further my education, but even then, will anyone hire me? It's going to be tough finding work.
I know how you feel. There are days that I just want to give up looking. I have been sending resumes and no calls. I have applied for full and part time since I got laid off almost 3 years. Only a few interviews I have gotten but never panned out. I am still too young to collect Social Security however do not know if this is true, but I was told you still can but it will not be the full amount that is originally due if one waited til retirement age.
However, Captain, I agree, we must never give up. I am 51 and I know it is hard to compete with younger generation that just came out of college. I do have my days where I just say forget it, but a part of me has a desire to continue on and fight back and praying I land a job even a part time.
Yet I fear as long liberals are in control of everything, we are headed downhill. All we can do is prepare and help each other.
I do wish you the very best in your endeavors of job hunting and pray you get the job you want or desire.
