Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer made the announcement at a news conference Wednesday.
The slain officer was identified as 7-year veteran Kerrie Orozco, 29.
According to Schmaderer, Orozco and other officers with the Metro Area Fugitive Task Force were conducting surveillance on a shooting suspect in the area of Martin Avenue and Read Street just before 1 p.m. Wednesday.
Officers spotted the suspect, identified as Marcus D. Wheeler, in front of a home off nearby Vane Street.
Schmaderer said Wheeler fired several shots at officers and then fled toward a home on Martin Avenue.
When officers confronted Wheeler, police said, gunfire was exchanged between officers and the suspect, leading to Orozco's injuries.
Schmaderer said officers found that Wheeler was also suffering from gunshot wounds and had a semi-automatic handgun with a high-capacity drum magazine lying next to him.
Orozco and Wheeler were taken in extremely critical condition to CHI Health Creighton University Medical Center, where they later died.
A trauma surgeon said doctors did everything they could to save them, but both ultimately succumbed to their injuries.
Law enforcement took over security at the hospital's trauma unit, which is standard procedure in these incidents. Deputies initially told KETV that the hospital was on lockdown; however, hospital officials said patients were free to come and go from the facility.
Schmaderer said Orozco gave birth prematurely to a child in February and that the baby is scheduled to be released from the hospital this week. Orozco also has two step-children.

I’ll bet you never hear mention of this incident from either Sharpton or Jesse Jackson. There isn’t a dime to be made with this one.
Jackson and Sharpton are only concerned about one thing. They only get involved when money is concerned.
OK now I know more about drum mags than I did before. I admit the first thing I thought of was a Luger Schnellfeuer but thought it unlikely that a homeboy would be using one.

The guy is using extended mags, not a drum, but look at what a Glock will do if it’s “suitably modified.” I know you can possess something like this in Arizona if you have a Federal License.

Therefore Nebraska must have almost no crime at all.

I quit FR for about a year, and stopped my monthly donations because these POS take me to memories/nightmares I don’t care to think about. I made an exception on this one...perhaps because I have buried a few brothers and a sister, and a little piece of me dies every time one of these murders happen. I served for 30 years and retired in 2002.
Two years before I retired, a meth freak used a shotgun to murder one of my guys. Deputy Wally Davis never saw it coming. The POS shot once through his screen door. That one shot removed most of Wally’s head, his brains and his face.
Wally was there to help him.
The POS barricaded himself. I ran the negotiation team... it took 36 hours to get that bastard to surrender. Not killing him was the most difficult thing I had ever done.
Wally’s new wife delivered their first child 7 months after his death.

I just checked TX and NE demographics on the US Census Bureau website.
NE has 3.8% as many blacks as TX (if that might mean anything - or not)
To be in line with TX, NE should have had 20 executions during the same period.
So, yeah; less crime, but probably due more to less aggressive sentencing in NE, for whatever reason.
