Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer made the announcement at a news conference Wednesday.
The slain officer was identified as 7-year veteran Kerrie Orozco, 29.
According to Schmaderer, Orozco and other officers with the Metro Area Fugitive Task Force were conducting surveillance on a shooting suspect in the area of Martin Avenue and Read Street just before 1 p.m. Wednesday.
Officers spotted the suspect, identified as Marcus D. Wheeler, in front of a home off nearby Vane Street.
Schmaderer said Wheeler fired several shots at officers and then fled toward a home on Martin Avenue.
When officers confronted Wheeler, police said, gunfire was exchanged between officers and the suspect, leading to Orozco's injuries.
Schmaderer said officers found that Wheeler was also suffering from gunshot wounds and had a semi-automatic handgun with a high-capacity drum magazine lying next to him.
Orozco and Wheeler were taken in extremely critical condition to CHI Health Creighton University Medical Center, where they later died.
A trauma surgeon said doctors did everything they could to save them, but both ultimately succumbed to their injuries.
Law enforcement took over security at the hospital's trauma unit, which is standard procedure in these incidents. Deputies initially told KETV that the hospital was on lockdown; however, hospital officials said patients were free to come and go from the facility.
Schmaderer said Orozco gave birth prematurely to a child in February and that the baby is scheduled to be released from the hospital this week. Orozco also has two step-children.

You are describing Chicago to a tee. Maybe that is the answer, because they don’t need to set themselves up as targets by trying to keep order in the Black ghettos. At the same time, too many of our LEOs operate like criminals themselves. I sit here just wondering how far things are going to have to go before the SHTF.
He didnt send anyone to the funeral of the two officers who were murdered in Mississippi(One of the cops was black) so just goes to show, Obama doesn’t even care when someone black dies, if that black person is an officer he’s considered the enemy no matter what the skin color
