Wife of biker inmate: Some arrested in Texas are innocent

Bullets ricocheted around the parking lot of Twin Peaks, the Waco restaurant where a motorcycle gang shootout left nine dead, just minutes after Theron Rhoten pulled in on his vintage Harley chopper for a regional motorcycle club meeting, according to Rhoten’s wife. Katie Rhoten told The Associated Press that her husband ran for cover and was later arrested, along with antique motorcycle enthusiast friends and other “nonviolent, noncriminal people.” Authorities swept up around 170 bikers who had descended on the restaurant for what one club member described as a gathering to discuss laws protecting motorcycle riders.... McLennan County Sheriff Parnell McNamara and Waco police Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton declined to comment Tuesday on allegations that innocent bikers were arrested.

First ... An outlaw motorcycle club (sometimes known as a motorcycle gang, biker gang, or bikie gang (in Australian English)[1]) is a motorcycle subculture which has its roots in the immediate post-World War II era of American society. It is generally centered on the use of cruiser motorcycles, particularly Harley-Davidsons and choppers, and a set of ideals which celebrate freedom, nonconformity to mainstream culture and loyalty to the biker group.

In the United States, such motorcycle clubs are considered "outlaw" as they are not sanctioned by the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) and do not adhere to the AMA's rules. Instead the clubs have their own set of bylaws reflecting the outlaw biker culture

Outlaw motorcycle clubs who identify with this subculture are not necessarily criminals, with some members expressing their outlaw status on a social level, and equating the word "outlaw" with disregard for the law of groups like the American Motorcyclist Association, not that of civic government

Second ...

If you read the papers or listen to the news, the media and law enforcement agents have redefined the term "1%er". As we all know the term was first used in the 60’s to describe some of the people that attended the motorcycle events back then. The AMA (American Motorcycle Association) stated that 99% of the people at their events were god fearing and family oriented. The other 1%er were hard riding, hard partying, non mainstream type people. Thus the term 1%er was born. Some of the early bikers embraced the term and decided to call themselves 1%ers.

It did not mean that they were law breakers or low life individuals. They were simply men that rode their motorcycles seven days a week in all kinds of weather, liked to drink and raise a little hell. Sometime during the 80’s law enforcement changed the meaning of the 1%er to what they wanted it to represent. It didn’t matter that their meaning was incorrect, they just spoon fed it to the general public and the courts as they had so many other things.

....”At one point, as many as 30 gang members were shooting at one another in the restaurant’s parking lot”....

Interesting...

...it would be great to know if the establishment had video in that parking lot and or inside. If so likely the authorities have it and not released as yet.

The dominate statement in post 63, was this “Most don’t realize that you can be a “1%er” without being a criminal”, which you seemed to be agreeing with.

That’s not what the 1%er’s are saying......there are specific actions one must do to earn that patch. According to one who said it doesn’t mean stealing or beating on another....it goes well beyond that.

So I tend to think what the Gang bikers say it stands for. And it isn’t something the police labeled for them.

The term 1%er has always meant the outlaw gangs.

You are a member of a 1%er club?

You forgot to ask "How many members are in your club ?"

People who have real experience with "clubs" will know the joke

Why does the above-board 99% need the 1% to discuss “common concerns”? Is the highway department going to be more impressed with your petition for better roads because criminal gangs are among the signatories?

I would think the opposite — the 1% want better roads to better carry out their criminal activities . . .

I guess bikers understand something you just don't get.

Even people who are not on the socially approved list have rights. Even those you might not like can share a common goal (like raising money for charity and donating toys for poor kids at Christmas).

But if you are gong to avoid every person who is less than perfect enough for you, go tell HR you won't work around any of a number of 'undesirable groups' and see how long you last--or is it okay because that's how you make money?

We aren't talking the Communist party here, quite the opposite. Freedom is foremost, and you'[d be hard pressed to find a more patriotic bunch--one which includes veterans from every war we've fought and even active duty service personnel.

Saying they are associating with a 'criminal element' because people show up from a different club who don't have exactly a spotless record would be like saying you associated with terrorists because you were in the crowd when they bombed the Boston Marathon.

One more thing, those of the Christian Motorcyclist's Association and other similar groups will show, and witness about Jesus and The Almighty in some of the worst places...hmmm. Just like Jesus, who didn't spend so much time hanging with the 'approved' as around the wharves, and who has called those who serve Him to bear witness.

Regardless of motive, generally differences are set aside for those issues which affect all bikers.
