A 16-year-old girl has been gored by a bison in Yellowstone National Park while posing for a picture near the animal.

The National Park Service says the unidentified girl's injuries were serious but not life-threatening.

The agency described her as an exchange student from Taiwan who was visiting the park with her host family.

The incident occurred shortly after noon Friday in the Old Faithful area.

The Park Service says she and others were between 3 and 6 feet from the bison when she turned her back to the bison to have her picture taken. The bison took a couple steps and gored her.

The girl was airlifted to an area hospital.

The Park Service advises visitors to stay at least 25 yards away from bison in the park.

I think sometimes our Asian friends just don’t have a full appreciation for the danger of wild animals. I saw a Japanese tourist once try to pet a coyote in Yosemite NP. The animal was preoccupied with eating a squirrel so that gave me time to pull the guy back.

I think they get all their wild animal knowledge from cartoons.

That’s why I always wear roller skates when visiting the buffalo heard.

Well, there’s the problem. That warning will now have to be printed in Chinese.

Too many raise their children to see wild animals as the same as those in Disney movies.

In their minds, National Parks are no different than Disney Parks.

Everything is there for their amusement.....until they get hurt.....then it is everyone else’s fault for their deceptive education.

Stick to Hello Kitty. Although I know someone who tried to pet a feral cat in the Dominican Republic and ended up having rabies shots for their trouble.

I lay partial blame on all those feel-good movies and TV shows depicting animals as differently-shaped people. Everybody knows that killer whales, grizzly bears and lions are tame and you can play with them. It’s part of the liberal take on the world that there are no dangers.

For most of those animals, we’re potentially on the menu.

I once had the misfortune of finding myself about 15 feet away from a bison in Elk Island National Park. It was only be chance that it was in a good mood and choose to move itself down stream from his original position as I very carefully backed up and hoped it would not charge.

You see that kind of thing at Banff National Park all the time. Signs are posted in five or six languages, but are ignored. Unfortunately, of the animals that are put down, most are killed because they get accustomed to, and become a danger to people not through their actions rather, the actions of the people not heeding the warnings.

The US prison in Leavenworth has kept a couple of cow and 1 Male Bison in a large fenced area on the west side of the main Prison with a viewing area. Occasionally the cows calve and when weaned the calves are moved to the main herd at Ft Riley. while removing the momma and baby, the momma decided she didn't like trailers and ran off, it took 7 riders and a crushed Associate Wardens Volkswagen to get momma under control in 5 hours or so ,fun and lots of stories.

-——“The Park Service advises visitors to stay at least 25 yards away from bison in the park.”——

I would assume that is the distance where the bison will not pay attention to you....not the distance you need to out run it....

Good comment. Nature doesn’t protect the careless, weak or stupid. That is the hard reality versus the naïve world of fantasy.
