I was hiking around in Rocky Mt. National Park some years ago. As I was photographing a large herd of elk, they started to surround me. I kept backing off, they kept grazing closer and closer to me. The herd bull was very close to me, with a rack of antlers as big as an armchair. I backed away slowly until I was about 30' outside of the herd, and kept backing slowly away. I had never been this close to elk and did not know, for example, that the calves made a kitten-like mewing sound. I saw an elk mom try to stomp a coyote to pieces after it got too close to her calf. I saw prairie dogs popping up and back down tunnels. It was Nature, what you don't read about in books or see on Discovery necessarily.

To my surprise and shock, a group of idiot tourists that I had not seen when I first started photographing the elk kept going closer and closer. I told them that these were not tame animals. That the herd bull over yonder could drive those sharp antlers right through you, powered by something around 1,000 pounds of weight behind it, and that they could run much faster than we could. I repeated myself and told them to back off. Suddenly, I heard this deep sonorous voice behind me say, "Thank you. You may have saved a life here." I looked UP (quite a ways) to find a towering park ranger (they all seem to be!) smiling down on me.

So I can well believe this stupid girl, who obviously had not done her homework, would pull a foolish act like this.

I was delivering a calf in the middle of a pasture when something licked my neck. I was prone trying to mutate the foetus so I could deliver it when I felt the long tongue on my neck. I thought it another cow but turned around and was facing a bison. I didn't know there were bison in the pasture also. I continued delivering the calf but there was some puckering going on within me.

I was surrounded by a herd of 100 bison moving past me in Yellowstone’s Bison Ford area. Stood behind a tree as they passed within three feet with nothing but a graphite fly rod in my hand.

Yep. We have had many Japanese homestay students. They have no idea what “wild” really is. In urban Japan, they see some black birds, and that is about it. Not even any squirrels.

They can sprint 80 mph, three times faster than you can run??? That’s even faster than Bob Hayes.

My favorite place ever. This year will be #9 and next year #10, but the first times with our grandchildren along. It will be like seeing it all over again for the first time.

Sadly, the Park Service has caved to stupidity. They should be warned to stay in their cars, and completely away.

Once saw a family of four leap out of their vehicle and run at full sprint towards a black bear that was lollygagging around near a road. The bear's reaction was like "Whoa, whoa, take it easy! Take it easy!" and fled from the gang that was bearing down on it. Am certain the family was oblivious to the carnage that could have resulted if the bear had been on the cranky side of a mood.

Yellowstone really is a fascinating place. I like to imagine old Rough Rider Teddy giving the Secret Service fits on his visits to that park.

A lot of people don’t realize that we have Park Rangers as a result of the Stage Coach robbery that took place in Yellowstone. Lots of history there.

I would love to listen to your stories.....perhaps my wife and I will get lucky on one of our future trips to Yellowstone. ;>)

One of my many hats for a couple of years was that of SAR Coordinator for my county and as such, I was privileged to spend two weeks in Yellowstone. One week was for intensive training for SAR Coordinators..... the second week was mostly screwing around and spending a few vacation days while playing with my camera. ;>) The instructors were very helpful, experts in the field and fantastic to listen to.

That would be incredible to have you and your wife on a tour! Unfortunately, I free lance for motorcoach companies from my area in Tennessee. Had a chance to work for Collette and Globus, but my husband had emergency bypass surgery and I won’t leave him home alone. The local companies are glad to have him along, so it works out well.

Sounds like you have had some adventures! My favorite out West trip includes Jackson Hole. If you have never done a float trip on the Snake River, I highly recommend it.

The best cruise Ever is Alaska, preferably with a few days to spend in the interior. I personally like Norwegian because of their freestyle policy. Who the heck wants to come back to the ship from a long day of touring and have to get gussied up to eat dinner?!

We always make a point to visit Jackson when going to Yellowstone. One of our stops is Aspen cemetery where my wife’s great-uncle is buried, “A Rugged Pioneer”. He was and early settler in the 1800’s. His ranch is now part of the Elk Reserve. Also participated in the posse to Cunningham Cabin to dispatch two horse thieves.

In addition to the scenic rafting on the Snake, we have also done white water rafting there. It is truly God’s country there.

There is not a lot of wildlife left there so most of the animals they see are the partly tamed ones in zoos.

The visitors from India tend to be a bit more cautious around wild animals.
