Boy, the Men Seeking Men media is going all out to protect their fellow gay from being held responsible for killing 8 people and injuring hundreds of others.

That's nothing, I was travelling by train from Portland, Oregon to Tacoma, Washington a few years back when, right after we crossed the Columbia river, we saw a carload of college aged gals, off to the side flashing us with their...um...upper frontal parts?

I was mortified and quickly looked away as soon as they disappeared in the distance.

What does rock throwing have to do with derailing a 5,000 ton train?

Are they suggesting a rock or brick derailed the train? Are they suggesting a big rock hit the engineer in the face, knocking him unconscious?

Twice the speed limit. That’s the issue.

Ok so a rock or some sort of projectile hit the glass but how does that speed up the train from 50 to 106 around the curve.

Perhaps, if I get caught speeding. I can always tell the officer that a rock hit my windshield, or I ran over something. I doubt that explanation would work. =)

Is the MSM leading up to some sort of speculation along the lines of, “Train accident may have been caused by a rock thrown by an anti-government, Tea Party wacko who opposes Amtrak”?

.
Rocks small enough to throw don’t derail Trains nor make them speed up.

You throw rocks at a moving vehicle you should be tried found guilty and jailed. But how does getting hit by a rock increase speed to 106 mph? My understanding is that the throttle is a dead man. So if the engineer got dinged he held onto the throttle while he was dinging. Possible I guess but highly improbable.

Hmmmmm.....sounds like it is time for train owners to re-institute the Old West policy of having "shotgun riders".

Install a cupola on the engine a la the gunners pods on WWII bombers. Equip with night vision and telescopic sights and a fixed mount "sniper rifle".

Pick off one or two rock throwers, and the action will stop (one way or another).

Years ago in my little Iowa hometown a train loaded with new Ford pickup trucks was parked on a siding, waiting for a coal train to come by.

A classmate was parked by the train which had blocked the highway into town. He got out of his pickup and climbed up to get a closer look. One of the trucks had an unlocked door so he got in to check it out.

A moment later, the train began to move. In a few moments, he was a mile from the crossing and the train was picking up speed.

Since jumping off was out of the question, he settled back and road the train (inside a new Ford pickup) all the way to Kansas City, Missouri.

Arriving in KCMO, he got out of the pickup and walked over to a small office building which turned out to be part of the RR’s control room.

Meanwhile, back in Iowa, his own pickup had been discovered idling by the RR tracks with no one inside. The sheriff was called. His wife suggested he'd been kidnapped.

Trying to explain his arrive to the RR inspector, he was allowed a phone call to his wife. She drove down to KC that afternoon and picked up the railroad riding husband.

The sheriff related the story to the local paper. Folks are still laughing in the little Iowa town.

As on a similar thread, I'll ask:

"By what principle of physics does a thrown rock cause a train to accelerate to 106 MPH?"

Folks, Occam’s Razor, please.

Let’s say the reports of the rocks/projectiles are true. So, we have an engineer tooling along at 60mph when “Bamm!” the front windshield cracks (but does not break) from a rock impact. Being an idiot (and afraid), he does what most of us would do in a car if we saw someone throwing or shooting at us, he floors it. But he’s in a train, and at a dangerous curve. And viola, train crash...

This is not a defense. As an engineer, he should not have accelerated to “escape.” He knows this (which is why he “can’t remember”). But this will be the most likely explanation of this crash (assuming the projectile damage is found), when all is said and done...
