Removal of Confederate flags from cemetery sparks controversy [Alabama]
Fox Carolina ^ | May 16, 2015 | Lindsey Rogers

A prominent attorney admits to taking flags from the graves of soldiers, a move that's sparked both positive reaction and calls for him to be arrested and disbarred. He's also received death threats and hate mail.

The lawyer says his actions are meant to promote unity.

A bag of small Confederate flags sits at Union Springs City Hall. They were removed from graves at an old Confederate cemetery downtown, behind the Red Door Theater, near the intersection of Highway 82 and North Prairie Street.

Myron Penn pulled up the flags with his family on Mother's Day. Penn, a founding partner at Penn & Seaborn Attorneys at Law in Union Springs, who served as state senator for two terms and as chairman of the Bullock County Commission, says he did it for his 4-year-old son.

“The reason why we picked them up is because the image of the flags in our community, a lot of people feel that they're a symbol of divisiveness and oppression of many people in our community,” Penn said. “Especially with the history that that flag and the connotation and negativism that it brings. I would think that no one in our community would have a problem with this or with my actions at all.”

But Confederates are classed as veterans. So you are anti-veteran.

You know, you have enough bigotry to join your choice of either the Klan or the Nation of Islam.

Scum such as yourself is not worth arguing with. A brick to your face would be more in order and would make your worthless arguments much more palatable. However, I am sure you will continue your keyboard war that no one cares about.

Oh for crying out loud, you’re still on your period.

What made you go crazy was my simple statement about good men dying under both flags”.

For that simple and truthful statement you decided to rant and insult me. Now, in your troll fashion, you continue and take it down to an even lower level as you try to insult my ancestors, even referring to me and my ancestors as un-American.

You don’t know me, you sure as heck don’t know anything about my ancestors. You don’t even know for certain what color my skin is.

I already know much about you, at the top of the list is that you are an ignorant fool.

You’re apparently having a micro-aggression moment. Go read an old original print copy of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain...perhaps it will calm you down. LOL @ you.

And for Gods sake, take some Midol and don’t talk to me for about a week.

The only reason Davis wasn’t hung was because of the mercy of Lincoln. Guess you missed The Emancipation Proclamation too, huh?

OK, at least now you are cracking jokes. That's an improvement.

For those less attuned to history:

Lincoln Assassinated April 15, 1865
Jefferson Davis captured May 10, 1865

Not in my book bub. Nation of Islam? That’s a laugh. The thing Confederacy and Islam have in common is they both hold slavery in high regard. And the Klan? Sorry that’s your ancestors bub. Mine used to go to Klan rallies with ax handles and bust heads. The Klan being anti-Catholic, among other things. How about you bub, you anti-Catholic? Here’s something else for you bub. I donate to Jewish charities. You ain’t anti-Semitic are you?

That's as revisionist a history as I've ever seen. Lincoln didn't wait until the end of the war to ‘’let them up easy’’(his words) He let Grant know that before the two met at Appomattox Courthouse.

Irony is sure lost on you, ain't it Reb? Here's something for you: “There can be no divided Aalegiance here. Any man who calls himself American but something else also isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag, and this excludes the red flag, which symbolizes all wars against liberty and civilization''.-- Teddy Roosevelt.

Ma’am:
I would suggest calling this vile person ‘jamacusa’ out to the moderators. He is at the very least a disruptor and at worst some sort of troll. I have sent a couple notes to the mods about his activities and if a number of complaints arrive he will get hit with some stray voltage

That's as revisionist a history

It's revisionist history that Lincoln died before Davis was captured?

You are entitled to your own opinion. You are not entitled to your own set of facts. And if that is what they teach in yankee schools, you deserve a refund.

93 “all men are created equal” Live in New Orleans for a few years, five or more, and come back and tell me if you believe that is actually so.

I know exactly of what you speak. We both know TJ was referring to "in the eyes of the law". I watched in horror during the aftermath of Katrina in 2005. Like many Freepers, I think we are in for another "reckoning" and BHO is egging it upon us. I pray that I can hold onto my Christian faith during the coming crisis. We will be sorely tested.

No it’s revisionist what you’re trying to do. Lincoln had said to Grant before he went to Appomattox “Let them up easy’’. Now what do you suppose he meant by that? For Gods sake how long are you going to go on fighting an immoral war your ancestors deliberately started and lost?

The only thing immoral around here is you.

By the way - Davis wasn’t at Appomattox. And Lee didn’t surrender for the Confederacy. He surrendered his Army of Northern Virginia. The Army of Tennessee was still in the field, as were forces in Texas and Oklahoma.

And, of course, after General Stand Watie surrendered his force, General Forrest organized one of the first instances of asymmetrical warfare and carried on until 1869.

Are only those killed in battle buried there or are Confederate veterans also interned there?

Over in Kingston, GA and here in Marietta, GA the Confederate cemetery has only the Confederate soldiers that died in battle.

My GGF is buried in our family's ancestral church cemetery that was started in 1836. Many others from the Twenty-Ninth Alabama Infantry Regiment are also buried there. My brother pointed out to me this afternoon that the gravestone of my GGF's younger brother Ira indicates he died in 1864 (died in the battle of Atlanta) so even though he died in the war, his body came home to Alabama be buried. My GGF does have an official US government marker placed there only a few years ago to recognize his CSA veteran status. My GGGF on my Mother's side of the family was also in the 29th Ala. He was captured at the battle of Kennesaw Mountain which is only a few miles from my home and imprisoned at Camp Douglas, Ill. until the end of the War.

As you seem to vehemently resent the very existence of Southern heritage, why do you jump on these posts just to stress so over something that does not affect your life in the least?
