Removal of Confederate flags from cemetery sparks controversy [Alabama]
Fox Carolina ^ | May 16, 2015 | Lindsey Rogers

A prominent attorney admits to taking flags from the graves of soldiers, a move that's sparked both positive reaction and calls for him to be arrested and disbarred. He's also received death threats and hate mail.

The lawyer says his actions are meant to promote unity.

A bag of small Confederate flags sits at Union Springs City Hall. They were removed from graves at an old Confederate cemetery downtown, behind the Red Door Theater, near the intersection of Highway 82 and North Prairie Street.

Myron Penn pulled up the flags with his family on Mother's Day. Penn, a founding partner at Penn & Seaborn Attorneys at Law in Union Springs, who served as state senator for two terms and as chairman of the Bullock County Commission, says he did it for his 4-year-old son.

“The reason why we picked them up is because the image of the flags in our community, a lot of people feel that they're a symbol of divisiveness and oppression of many people in our community,” Penn said. “Especially with the history that that flag and the connotation and negativism that it brings. I would think that no one in our community would have a problem with this or with my actions at all.”

"Wonder what he’d do if they were Confederate National flags (the “Bonny Blue Flag” rather than Confederate Battle Flags)?" He probably wouldn't know what it was. Just like when they changed the GA state flag removing the battle flag portion to appease the whiners. Now it looks exactly like the Confederate National, but none of the complainers realize it. 😄

No, you crawl back under the rock you crawled out of, treasonous prole. That isn’t the flag they swore to defend.

First of all pal, I don't hate the South. I don't like Confederates. And as far as bigotry, I've been the target here of some vicious stuff, threats, etc. Doesn't faze me, when you don't have an argument you hurl invective. Openly patriotic part of the country? What a pantload that is and I dare say a sweeping generalization if ever there was one. So no other part of America can be as patriotic as a reformed bunch of Dixiecrats? Never ceases to amaze me how people , like you, who claim to be conservatives come to a conservative website venerating a bunch of Dixiecrats. And if you identify with the South so much why are you living in Ohio?

The only jackass here is you bud. The DoD also pays$700 dollars for toilet seats. Not to bright on either end.

So now you have fully established yourself as anti-veteran.

38 U.S. Code § 2306
(a) The Secretary shall furnish, when requested, appropriate Government headstones or markers at the expense of the United States for the unmarked graves of the following:
(3) Soldiers of the Union and Confederate Armies of the Civil War.
https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/38/2306

And you might want to stay out of Georgia. Or better yet, keep yourself out of the south completely.

Ga Code § 50-3-9. It shall be unlawful for any person, firm, or corporation to mutilate, deface, defile, or abuse contemptuously the flag of the United States, the flag, coat of arms, or emblem of the State of Georgia, or the flag or emblem of the Confederate States of America by any act whatever.
50-3-11. Any person, firm, or corporation who violates any provision of Code Section 50-3-8 or 50-3-9 shall be guilty of a misdemeanor.

And, whatever you do, don’t read about Fighting Joe Wheeler - it would probably make you blow a gasket.

We are no less patriotic in the North and there is a strong military tradition here as well. To say only the South alone possesses more martial spirit and patriotism than any other region of the country is ignorant to say the least and quite a bit chauvinistic. It was not always the case with the South and I don't here any real love for America, et al, North , East or West coming from these Reb wannabes who post here. It seems to all about the South.

My great-great grandfather was a Union Army medical clerk for the Army of the Potomac, Washington, DC, 1864-65. I do not believe this man had any right to trespass and desecrate someones grave. And those who fought for the Confederacy bear the responsibility for the deaths of some 750,000 Americans.

You’re right. It’s pointless to talk to the like of you and you’re ilk. You’re not Americans any more than your ancestors were.

Slavery, then? Is that not what the South was fighting for? Oh, wait, it was ‘’independence’’. Right. So it could go on maintaining that ‘’particular institution’’.

Are only those killed in battle buried there or are Confederate veterans also interned there?

Last words: The CSA did not lose. There was never a formal surrender and President Jefferson Davis was never tried for treason or any other charge.

There were no real winners in the war of Northern Aggression, but slavery increased exponenially when the Union reigned over Reconstruction and ensured the U.S. government functioned as a plantation for the entire nation — as it still does today.

Uh, did you miss April 9, 1865, Appomattox Court House? Lee signed the surrender there. The only reason Davis wasn’t hung was because of the mercy of Lincoln. Guess you missed The Emancipation Proclamation too, huh?
