PHILADELPHIA — An assistant conductor on the Amtrak train that derailed on Tuesday believes she heard the engineer tell another regional train operator in a radio transmission that the train had been struck by something just before the accident, according to the National Transportation Safety Board.

At a news conference on Friday, Robert L. Sumwalt, the safety board official who is leading the investigation, said the F.B.I. had been asked to examine what he described as a fist-size impact area found on the lower left side of the train’s windshield. Officials said that the F.B.I. had been called in because it has the forensics expertise needed for the investigation, but that it had not yet begun its analysis.

Intresting. I fear if we haven’t seen them by now we will never see them.

Thanks. I think it might be a mistake for somebody to claim that the video of those cameras captured nothing out of the “ordinary”

I was wondering if the holes in the windshield came from something(s) that struck as the train derailed?

Think about a train covering all tracks at the speed of light.

You WILL hit something if it’s in the air in your path. Much more often than if you were going 53 mph.

Gotta protect the ‘crotch watcher’. Ruins the narrative.

Forget the gay bashing crap; I'm no friend to those types, but there is something else here that caused him to increase speed. Maybe he panicked if a rapid number of bullets hit the windshield and cab. Maybe it made him forget which curve he had passed and he thought straight track was just ahead. I don't think his being gay, straight or purple had anything to do with it. I think the real world interfered with his comfort zone and he was taken completely unprepared and made an incredibly bad decision.

Or maybe he accelerated to get away from whatever the source of the projectiles was. If so, it was damn reckless and, if anything, makes him look worse.

THE ENGINEER HAS A HEAD INJURY. Caused by WHAT???

What if the engineer was also struck by said object or the spray of fragments and that his head injury is a result of THAT and not the accident?? Not so far fetched that the train sped up if it caused him to lurch the accelerator forward.

Train Derailments throw a lot of debris. Lots more if there is stuff to hit.

When I was a kid my granddad took me to check out the scene of a train derailment in Grass lake Michigan. The train was carrying a load of Fords out of Detroit.

He could have been asleep with his forehead resting against the inside of the front window when a yute threw a brick and the force knocked out the driver who then fell against the throttle. Do I really need the ole /s?

I’d think they would have scanned his head 8 ways from Sunday if he reported being dazed.

Getting hit by a projectile that did not penetrate but did give him a concussion might in fact explain his leaning on the throttle like that. Like put the hammer down, let’s get outta here. Call it a “faggy” reaction all you wish but at least it wasn’t purposed for harm.

Highly unlikely.
