I was wondering if the holes in the windshield came from something(s) that struck as the train derailed?

Train Derailments throw a lot of debris. Lots more if there is stuff to hit.

When I was a kid my granddad took me to check out the scene of a train derailment in Grass lake Michigan. The train was carrying a load of Fords out of Detroit.

Loco likely grazed a catenary support pole on the right side of the loco as it was leaving the tracks.
