Business damage from Baltimore riot estimated at $9M

Damage is estimated at $9 million for the destruction of hundreds of businesses and two homes during the recent unrest in Baltimore — with at least 30 sustaining major damage, according to information released Wednesday.

The Small Business Administration estimated the damaged at about $8.9 million to 284 business and $60,000 to two houses, officials told The Baltimore Sun.

U.S. Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski, along with other Maryland Democrats, called for Small Business Administration to assist with the creation of disaster centers in the city and a plan to inform business owners who are eligible for benefits about how to apply for assistance.

Many of the damaged businesses have limited or no insurance coverage, according to the BDC. Some of the most severely damaged businesses remain closed, and their owners have no source of income.

And they all received about $5 damage each so it wasn’t so bad really.

That number sounds really light to me. Heck, the inventory loss from that CVS store alone could be a substantial part of it.

Sue the city and her for giving them space to riot.

“That number sounds really light to me.”

Me too. I thought the one unfinished senior center was 8 million?

What an outrage!

Obviously these people lived in an underserved, disenfranchised area if there was only $9 million worth of property available to destroy!

Federally-funded disaster centers? Isn’t that what Baltimore is right now?

I agree, it seems like a bogus number. If the public ever found out the real amount ...

Well they just might care that a bunch of thugs went on an uncontrolled rampage.

What the....Mikulski wants the taxpayers to reimburse the businesses that were damaged or destroyed when the Mayor and her minions allowed the animals of her city to rampage?

Hopeless city, hopeless state.

Isn’t it true that most insurance policies have an exclusion for insurrection/rioting/civil disturbances??? Meaning if true, many of these businesses will not have insurance coverage.

And, even if they do have insurance, or get disaster aid to rebuild, will they be able to get insurance in the future? Or will premiums be so high as to be prohibitive??? There are many angles to consider in all of this.
