Autistic Girl Removed From Flight After Emergency Landing

(CBSNews) — An Oregon family traveling with a 15-year old autistic girl was kicked off a flight this week for what the airline calls a “disruptive” situation.

The family calls it an outrage.

Video shot by a fellow passenger and posted to YouTube showed Salt Lake City airport police removing the family from a United Airlines flight last Tuesday, after the pilot made an emergency landing.

The girl’s mother, Donna Beegle, was shocked when officers explained why.

“He said, ‘Well, the captain doesn’t feel comfortable flying to Portland with your daughter on his flight,” Beegle told CBS News.

The trouble began halfway through the flight from Houston to Portland. Beegle says her daughter, Juliette, was hungry and started to act up.

“I know her. When she gets over hungry or over thirsty, she really struggles,” Beegle described.

Her mother says Juliette is a picky eater, so she asked a flight attendant if she could purchase a hot meal from first class — and says she was told no.

“Well, I said, ‘How about we wait for her to have a meltdown and then she is crying and tries to scratch — and then you’ll want to help her,'” Beegle said she told the flight attendant.

Beegle eventually got the meal and said Juliette calmed down. Then came an announcement from the captain.

“We were shocked to hear them say, ‘We’re going to make an emergency landing in Salt Lake City, we have a passenger in the back of the plane who has behavior issues,'” Beegle said.

She is a little girl with a disability. I am sure the parents would be thrilled if she could do anything you have listed but she has autism and her future is limited. I know some of you have a bone to pick but when we stop protecting 15 yr old disabled girls we have lost our civilized country.

At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them and said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. “Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me, ...

Do you believe that people should be responsible for what they say and do?

You continue to claim that this is a child. She is not.

She is a little girl

You began your post with a falsehood.

That doesn't bode well for the rest of the post.

she has autism

The autism advocates never tire of telling us that it's a "spectrum" of disorders ... Its a grave error to paint all people who "have autism" as being identical.

when we stop protecting 15 yr old disabled girls

In some cases, they are their own worst enemy. Or second worst. In this case, I think her mother is her worst enemy, for reasons previously stated.

Yes...maybe I did allow emotion to come into this discussion but I am not going to apologize. I like that I am a conservative that till wants to protect the disabled and young and has a soft heart. Life has taught me...”by the grace of God go I” I am blessed to have healthy children but I can try to walk in someone’s shoes for a moment. This mom did the best she could with the situation given her and tried to advocate for her child.

Oh, yes:

#6: Be held legally responsible for her actions, as an adult.

Guess what, Sparkydoodles? THAT is going to happen whether you, or her mother, or she herself likes it or not. Her mother needs to be preparing her to deal with that. Prepared or not, adult accountability is going to smack her in the face.

Nothing that you have said in this thread identifies you as a conservative.

Humblegunner...praying that your heart is softened. My verse for you is Ezekiel 36:26 And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.

??? she is 120 pds and seated in the window seat by her dad and mom. Hardly able to jump up and savage other passengers. Why are you making up situations that did not happen? She cried a bit and the mom made several requests for a hot meal. The people on the flight as well as the 1st responders were dumbfounded by the overreaction by the airline.

What makes you say that? I do not expect society to make my SIL the center of its universe.

“So it is safer to divert a plane full of people and make an added landing and takeoff”

As a pilot with decades of experience, no big deal.

What is a big deal is the threat of violence. Not taking a threat like that seriously is not a safe course of action.

Hot meal? Great, bring your own. . McDonalds are at almost every airport. Hot meals for First Class are paid for by the First Class traveler and the airlines provide only enough meals to cover the number of First Class passengers. Taking one of those meals from a First Class passenger is theft. Asking a First Class passenger to give up a meal can be done but it is just plain rude—they paid for it, they get it.

Don't hold your breath, we marinated it in Jose Cuervo Gold for three years, and he's still ornery.

why did the mom not fly first class?

it is obvious the girl is not suitable to be out in public

She should not have been on the plane

Did you happen to grasp that she is a 15 yr old coming back from Disney. Maybe you can give her a break since she won't be 18 for 3 more years. God forbid if she is an adult and requests a hot meal on a plane. The horror....

"If the mom says the kid need some warm food...get the kids some warm food."

That little act of kindness would have gone a long way, what was the cost $10? IMHO the airline now has a public relations disaster on their hands with all parents of special needs kids. Would you fly with them now if you had a special needs child?

Penny wise and pound foolish, just my 2 cents...

I didn’t “make up” a situation. I put forth a potential one (more than one, really). There’s a difference.

Maybe next time, instead of responding with threats, the mom will take along one of those insulated hot bags with food inside. That’s what she should have done to begin with.

How do you know her weight? The article didn’t mention it.
