"For a pro-life group, some conservatives can be very cruel regarding those that God knit together uniquely. Somebody on the thread even referred to the girl as defective. Not pro-life at all!"

Are you accusing some on the thread of being pro-abortion? If so, please name names.

Most Christians recognize that babies are sometimes born with illnesses, problems, flaws, or limitations. It's a fallen world, you know. I don't know why you would blame that on God.

Where did I blame anything on God? I thank Him every day that He gave my son to me and not to somebody who thinks he has “flaws.” I can’t remember who posted that this particular girl is defective, but I did respond to him/her. A pro-life conservative would never refer to a person with ASD as defective, since defective is an excuse for pro-aborts. You are welcome to skim the thread for the post. I’m researching something else now. Peace be with you.

Of course you thank God for your baby. My husband’s family and I thank God for his mentally retarded aunt. We adore her.

Yet at the same time, we understand that she has problems. Why would we deny that? Retardation means what it means-—cognitively impaired. My husband’s grandparents and his family don’t go around saying the aunt is perfect or doesn’t have flaws because it simply isn’t true.

Therefore, you don’t blame God for the special needs of children anymore than you blame Him for any other issues.

Ugh. I told myself not to come back here but to continue researching. Is there a 12 step program for FR, lol? I don’t blame God at all. He works in mysterious ways and has placed these people in our lives for various reasons. I questioned Him at first, and over time realized that He gave me my son for a reason. What is that reason? I think my son will be the face of ASD, as well as for others who have issues that people can’t see. Because he is high functioning, people just think I’m a bad mom when he has his occasional meltdowns. His best friend is Downs Syndrome, and our community sees this normal looking boy properly engaging with a boy who, by simply looking at him, people know is different. When we devalue people who didn’t do anything to cause their problems by calling them defective, as a poster did, then it just adds fuel to the abortion fire. FR is better than that, in my opinion only.

Don't you think, as a mom (not to mention if you were a Dr) you might prepare yourself to meet your own child's needs, rather than looking to or expecting a "prissy first class guy" to care for your daughter?

From the ABC article:

The family ate dinner in Houston, Beegle said, but Juliette refused to eat. Beegle brought some snacks on board for her because "if her blood sugar lets go, she gets frustrated and antsy. We try to anticipate that and prevent that." After boarding, Beegle said she asked the flight attendant if she had any hot meals. "Juliette refuses room-temp food," Beegle said. "I had no real way to bring hot snacks in my bag." The attendant told her they had a hot sandwich, but the sandwich arrived cold, Beegle said, and Juliette refused to eat it.

Based on what is reported (which may, or may not, accurately reflect what actually happened), the mother did attempt to take care of her daughter's needs by trying to feed her during their layover in Houston, and by bringing snacks onboard with her, and by obtaining a sandwich from a flight attendant. And really, would it have killed the attendant to put the sandwich in the microwave and warmed it up?

I'm not saying the mother is blameless, because I don't think she handled things well after this point. And based on what happened next, I do think the Captain was justified in making an emergency landing. But it does sound like the mother did at least make a reasonable effort to tend to her daughter's needs.

The PIC is in the cockpit.

Reports of an incident of an unruly passenger/possible threat of violence. The PIC has no choice but to remain in the cockpit, to maintain safe flight and take steps that ensure the safe operation of the aircraft--and that would mean landing the jet, deplaning the problem and let the authorities sort it out. He is not a cop. Simple. You are arguing the PIC should have left the cockpit to engage in the middle of a dispute of some sort, a dispute where some threat of violence was alleged. Safest course of action is to leave it up to the authorities to sort who was right or wrong. Not his job.

Period.

End of discussion.

Because you clearly have no idea about airline operations, cockpit procedures, division of responsibilities between the cabin crew and the flight deck, FAA regulations, airlines policies and basic airmanship, you are so far off commenting knowledgeably on the PICs actions, and the level of support he is receiving from other pilots, it is laughable (to be blunt).

Look, we get it, you are emotionally invested in your position, but come on, don't try and argue on a subject you have no clue. Does not make you look anything but foolish by those that know.

My apologies. I'm still kind of new to this.

She would be considered a child here on FR if it came to having an abortion without parental consent, so we’re not really all that consistent around here with when people are children or not.

I’m not speaking of you, but there’s A LOT of heartlessness in this thread that I don’t want to be associated with as a conservative either. Like calling handicapped children “defective” or “incapable of being out in public.”

Any one of us could have a traumatic brain injury tomorrow which would render us “defective.” I think we’d all like to be treated a little bit better than this girl was, just out of basic human kindness.

Did the flight attendant HAVE TO do anything? No.

Should the Mom have had one of those Stouffer’s room temp heat-up meals or something? Yes

Do I question whether the flight attendant who refused to heat up a sandwich (when United’s own website says there will be sandwiches avail on a flight of this length) is lacking in basic human decency? Absolutely.

As a conservative, I believe there’s a wide divide between what I think the government or business should be REQUIRED do and what a person of any basic morality SHOULD REQUIRE THEMSELVES to do. And by that standard, the flight attendant failed.

United requires “Bistro boxes” be available on every flight over 3.5 hours. This flight was over 3.5 hours. There should have been bistro boxes with sandwiches which could have been heated in them (like Turkey and cheese on a roll, etc).

Thought I read she was given one of these but it didn’t suit her.

Amen. It’s appalling. Pro-life but “keep those damn defectives out of our sight.”

No, she’s accusing people on here of being anti-abortion but also anti-”defectives” (a poster’s words) having any quality of life.

They gave it to her cold. The mother had asked them, when boarding the plane, if they could heat something up for her and they said yes. Then they wouldn’t stick something in the microwave.
