Autistic Girl Removed From Flight After Emergency Landing

(CBSNews) — An Oregon family traveling with a 15-year old autistic girl was kicked off a flight this week for what the airline calls a “disruptive” situation.

The family calls it an outrage.

Video shot by a fellow passenger and posted to YouTube showed Salt Lake City airport police removing the family from a United Airlines flight last Tuesday, after the pilot made an emergency landing.

The girl’s mother, Donna Beegle, was shocked when officers explained why.

“He said, ‘Well, the captain doesn’t feel comfortable flying to Portland with your daughter on his flight,” Beegle told CBS News.

The trouble began halfway through the flight from Houston to Portland. Beegle says her daughter, Juliette, was hungry and started to act up.

“I know her. When she gets over hungry or over thirsty, she really struggles,” Beegle described.

Her mother says Juliette is a picky eater, so she asked a flight attendant if she could purchase a hot meal from first class — and says she was told no.

“Well, I said, ‘How about we wait for her to have a meltdown and then she is crying and tries to scratch — and then you’ll want to help her,'” Beegle said she told the flight attendant.

Beegle eventually got the meal and said Juliette calmed down. Then came an announcement from the captain.

“We were shocked to hear them say, ‘We’re going to make an emergency landing in Salt Lake City, we have a passenger in the back of the plane who has behavior issues,'” Beegle said.

Oh the horror of a 15 yr old girl with autism who needs a warm meal after traveling all day. Lets land the plane and throw her violent little azz off the plane. Even the responders were disgusted with the overreaction

"The paramedic asked if Juliette was okay. I said, 'she's fine.' Did she scratch someone? Puzzled I said, 'no.' The paramedic rolled his eyes, said they had real work they should be doing and they were going to leave.

My wife and I travel over 500 miles one way to vacation to Disney Word and we drive. Haven’t flown since 2002. Her sister doesn’t do well on airplanes.

We don’t expect the world to kiss our a$$ because her sister is disabled.

I never believed in the left’s caricature of unfeeling mean heartless conservatives but this thread is giving me a glimpse.

I am going to assume with such stupid triffle as this spew, that you are a female and completely unable to debate with logic. In other words, you are emotional and only use your heart, the rest of us be damned...

It was the mother who advised the flight attendant that her daughter had a history of violence.

Watch your language.

The solution would be for the attendant to listen to the mom’s request and bring a simple hot meal to the little girl and everyone can get home on time. The family offered to pay. Why can’t we expect an airline to accommodate a special request for a guest while they are in the air? Why cause a flight emergency with an easily solved problem?

Don’t you think you’re being overly emotional about this?

The mother admitted the girl has a habit of scratching.. If she tantrumed out and scratched someone with dirty fingernails, a nasty infection could result. That’s not acceptable.

I think people are tired of the attitude that you MUST put up with any and all behavior from a child because of a certain reason or other. My husband’s aunt is mentally retarded, and I know for a fact she wasn’t coddled and indulged as a child. She had boundaries. Her parents understood that the rest of the world didn’t see her as its center.

She’s not a “little girl” and her own mother admitted that she could become violent.

So what exactly is a 15 yr old girl? A MMA fighter? The mom said she would start crying and scratch(herself) When did conservative men become such big wimps? We make fun of the #tag "bring our girls home" yet overwhelmingly freeper men on this thread are ready to slap and sedate a disabled girl who is having a tough day. SMH

Why do you continue to mischaracterize this person as a “little girl”?

bring a simple hot meal to the little girl

You keep calling her a "little girl".

She isn't.

And if she doesn't know how to act and her parents can't make
her act right then she ought not to be on any plane.

Don't you think, as a mom (not to mention if you were a Dr) you might prepare yourself to meet your own child's needs, rather than looking to or expecting a "prissy first class guy" to care for your daughter?

I'm wondering if this mom has tried this before or if she really thought about caring for her own daughter's needs. I know if I knew my daughter only ate hot food and or have to eat every two hours, I'd probably travel by car so I could stop so often at a place that could serve some warm food or even purchase one of those car warmers to keep food warm.

Lastly, what if the airline didn't serve a "hot meal for first class?" What would that mom expect the, "prissy guy" do for her then?

You obviously think you are superior to this family. I feel sad that you think society can accommodate your disabled SIL.

A fifteen year old, out of control girl can be particularly dangerous on a plane, since there is no place for anyone to escape to.

I’m not a man, conservative or otherwise.

The family paid $1000s of dollars for 4 round trip tickets on a private airline. They asked for a very simple accommodation on the last leg of a long day of flying with children. You are stuck in the air on a plane and at the mercy of a flight crew and your disabled child is having blood sugar problems that can be avoided by a simple hot meal. It is NOT too much to ask to pay for a hot meal that is within 20 ft of your seat. Instead you antagonize the mom and make here beg and then you run to the captain and cause a midflight emergency.

A fifteen year old girl might not be a physical threat to a man, but how about another teenager? Or a younger child? Or a baby? Or an adult woman, for that matter...250 lb. teenaged girls are pretty common these days.

the little girl

That word does not mean what you think it means.

Your so-called "little girl" is 15 years old.

She has already experienced puberty.

In less than one year's time, she will be eligible to receive a driver license. In most states, she is currently eligible to receive a "learner's permit" to drive a car on the public streets.

In less than 3 years' time, she will be 18 years old, and eligible to:

1) VOTE
2) Join the military
3) Purchase tobacco products
4) Purchase a firearm
5) Sign contracts
6) Be held legally responsible for her actions, as an adult.

Continuing to pretend that she is a "little girl", and treating her as such, does her no favors. Quite the contrary. Her parents need to be teaching her how to manage her condition. Instead, they are teaching her to inflict her condition on everyone else.

So where was she out of control? Apparently the worst thing she did was cry. Once the warm meal was eaten she settled down and watched a movie. It is just embarrassing that grown adults could not handle a simple situation that 1000s of parents and teachers deal with on a daily basis. If the mom says the kid need some warm food...get the kids some warm food.

The family paid $1000s of dollars for 4 round trip tickets on a private airline.

Public airline. Get it right.

They asked for a very simple accommodation

They demanded something they hadn't paid for and likely unavailable.

You are stuck in the air on a plane and at the mercy of a flight crew and your disabled child is having blood sugar problems

No, I'm not. I don't get into situations like that.
My kids are fine and don't give a rat's ass about sugar.

One of 'em even flew in and out of Afghanistan and Germany
about a hundred times and never flipped out over sugar or food temperature.

It is NOT too much to ask to pay for a hot meal that is within 20 ft of your seat.

It is when it ain't available.
Especially when you make threats to get it.

Instead you antagonize the mom

Yep. She seems to be the problem.
