BBC ^ | 5/8/2015 | Me

UKIP only one parliamentary seat and Nigel Farage resigned after failing to win in the constituency he ran in. But UKIP came in third place with 3.9 MM votes or 12.7% gaining 9.6% easily beating the Liberal-Democrats. The problem is their votes are spread all over England so they only one seat in a first-past-the-post voting system.

UKIP votes: 1993 - formed
1997 - 105,000 votes and 0.3 percent
2001 - 390,000 votes and 1.6 percent
2005 - 606,000 votes and 2.2 percent
2010 - 980,000 votes and 3.8 percent
2015 - 3,840,000 votes and 12.8 percent

When just 37 percent of the vote can give you a clear majority of the House, as it did today, 13 percent and rising fast ain't bad!!!

Also, in the first-past-the-post system, being the #3 party is a very important place. If you don't want to support your Conservative party anymore as Cameron continues to pull a Jeb and go left for younger voters... but don't want those darn Labour guys coming back... then you basically vote against Labour by voting for UKIP. Plus, as the Muslim violence and mass-rape of underage white girls continue, UKIP will draw more support. And as anti-EU sentiment grows, so will UKIP. They could have a good future ahead, if they don't screw it up.

They lost a seat to the Tories.

So how did they lose a seat?

They never had a seat. They were going to try to win a seat, bu UKIP didn't get a plurality in that district.

However, it is pretty bad when you're tied with Captain Beany and the New Millennium Bean Party, which got its seat for its sole party member with just 558 votes... and retained that seat yet again today.

This election also saw 3,898 votes for the Monster Raving Looney Party... 8,419 votes for the Cannabis is Safer than Alcohol Party... and 526 votes for the Class War Party.

Their vote totals are EXPLODING. There has been a steady rise since 1997, then over the last 5 years, BOOM.

If this trend continues even for one more election cycle, there is going to be a massive and monumental shift in British politics.

Hmmm, the Powers That Be simply cannot let that happen.....

They did win a seat... in Clacton... it just wasn’t the seat Farage was going for in Thanet South, and he resigned a few moments ago as their leader. Farage lost, but they got their first seat, and they got a ton of votes, and they have increased their momentum. They’re in the important #3 slot, and they should be a huge player in 2020... and the BBC will be going after them for the next five years, just as the media excoriated Palin here.

Odd. BBC doesn’t show any Party going from 2 down to 1 on my laptop. UUP went from 0 to 2, UKIP went from 0 to 1, Sinn Fein went from 5 to 4, and the Alliance Party lost their one seat. That’s it for the little guys. Every other small party was unchanged overall. DUP won one and lost one to stay at 8. Green (1), Plaid Cymru (3), and SDLP (3) all held their seats.

Farage "said he would consider running for the job again when the leadership contest is held in September"", according to the BBC story.

Scroll to map and it will show present and previous seats held.

And they can stay out so long as they support outlanding Divinely-mandated kosher slaughter, without which Jews cannot eat meat.

Shame on them.

Proportional representation would have given UKIP 83 seats (by my calculation). UKIP reportedly finished in second place in 118 constituencies across the country. Despite the cries of those who say “close only counts in pitching horseshoes”, when counting their success in the European election, and their steady rise in successive elections, Farage and UKIP deserve a lot of credit.

If the trends continue, then in the next election, UKIP will be in a position to make the Conservatives win or lose seats by simply choosing to run or not run in certain districts.

They can make deals with the Conservatives: "either you pull out your candidates in districts with high UKIP polling numbers (letting us win), or we will run candidates in districts where we can deny you the plurality (letting Labour win)".

I think there were two defectors from the Tories who went UKIP without actually being elected as such.
